BEING READY FOR THE DAY OF THE LORD

The Lord Is Not Slack Concerning His Promises

It has been more than two thousand years since the Lord Jesus ascended to heaven. Is the Lord slack in terms of fulfilling His promise to come again? The answer is a definite “No”.

“The Lord is not slack concerning His promise, as some count slackness, but is longsuffering toward us, not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance.”
2 Peter 3:9

Whatever the Lord promised, it will undoubtedly and definitely come true. He is always faithful in keeping His promises. The reason why He has not returned yet is because He is most merciful and delays His coming so that more people would come to repentance and belief in Him. Let’s have absolute faith in the Lord’s promise that He will come.

The Day Of The Lord Will Come As A Thief In The Night

“But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night, in which the heavens will pass away with a great noise, and the elements will melt with fervent heat”
2 Peter 3:10

When the Lord comes, it will be a sudden and unexpected thing. He will come as a thief in the night when people are “sleeping” and are not ready for the break-in. Furthermore, when the Lord comes, it will initiate a series of events which would culminate in the passing away of the old heaven and the old earth and the formation of the new heaven and new earth. Everything on this earth will melt away. The Lord would create a new heaven and earth (Revelation 21:1).

Responses To The Coming Day Of The Lord

How should we practically respond to the day of the Lord?

1. Having A Greater Sense Of Expectation For The Day Of The Lord

“Looking for and hastening the coming of the day of God”
2 Peter 3:12

“Look for new heavens and a new earth in which righteousness dwells.”
2 Peter 3:13

The word “looking” in the Greek means “to wait for, expecting.” We are meant to look for the day of the Lord and to earnestly desire its coming. God is going to bring about a new heaven and a new earth. All things will become new. Righteousness will reign within these new entities. When we see how sinful and horrible this world is, let’s look forward to the Lord’s return.

2. Living A Distinct Christian Life

“What manner of persons ought you to be in holy conduct and godliness”
2 Peter 3:11

We must seek to live our lives differently from how the world lives. The best response to the day of the Lord is to live our lives with holy conduct and godliness. Knowing the terror of the Lord should cause us to cultivate an upright lifestyle. We must seek to be diligent in being found by Him in a state of peace with God and man (2 Peter 3:14). Let’s seek to live our lives well till the Lord returns.
