BEING A GOOD STUDENT OF THE LORD

The Lord As A Good And Upright Teacher

Do your teachers give up on you? When I was in Secondary School, there was a teacher who once told my class (a slightly below average class… only slightly) that none of us would ever make it to Junior College. Some of us proved him wrong. I am sure all of us had our fair share of not-so-understanding teachers. It is wonderful to know that God is not like such teachers at all. He is the most wonderful and the most gracious teacher ever.

“Good and upright is the Lord;
Therefore He teaches sinners in the way.
The humble He guides in justice,
And the humble He teaches His way.”

Psalm 25:8-9

He will not give up on sinners. He will not give up on slow learners. Because the Lord is good and upright, He will still teach sinners the right way. When we are humble and willing to learn, He will teach us the just and true way.

The Way The Lord Teaches

“I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go;
I will guide you with My eye.”

Psalm 32:8

How will the Lord teach us? First of all, the Lord will give us basic instructions. Many of us begin with no knowledge of God and His word. The Lord has to instruct us about the fundamentals of His ways through His word. We must first have a rudimentary knowledge of Him and His ways. Once there is a basic understanding, the Lord will tutor us further on what it means to be righteous. We will have a deeper knowledge of God’s paths. There is the understanding of specifics with reference to the way we should go. Last but not least, the Lord will personally guide us. As He watches over us in how we respond to His leading, He will direct us. He will guide us with His eyes.

Do Not Be Stubborn Students

“Do not be like the horse or like the mule,
Which have no understanding,
Which must be harnessed with bit and bridle,
Else they will not come near you.”

Psalm 32:9

Our challenge is to respond to the Lord’s teachings correctly. We are meant to be good students. We are not meant to be obstinate and rebellious like animals. A mule is one of the most stubborn animals in the world. A horse needs to be harnessed with a bit and bridle in order for one to control and lead it. Young people, we do not need to be obdurate and rebellious like animals. Instead, we should be humble and submissive to the teachings and leading of the Lord. Let’s be the kind of students the Lord wants us to be. Let’s seek to follow the ways of the Lord through being good students of His word.
