LIGHT THAT DISPELS OUR DARKNESS

One of the things that we struggle with is the darkness that may fill our mind and our soul. It can come when we are faced with overwhelming situations. There were moments when David was really fearful for his life. There were times when it seemed like his enemies were too strong for him and they confronted him in a time of calamity (Psalm 18:18). It was during such times that David still had that confidence that the Lord would bring light to his heart and soul.

For You will light my lamp. The Lord my God will enlighten my darkness.”   Psalm 18:28

He knew that the Lord would be his source of light. It was the Lord who was going to light up the way he saw things. The Lord His God would enlighten his darkness. How can we also have this light from the Lord?

1. When we live righteously

David had written about how the Lord would reward him according to his righteousness (Psalm 18:20). He was able to discover that God would show Himself merciful when people were merciful (Psalm 18:25-28). When they walk blamelessly, the Lord would show Himself blameless. When they are pure, He will show Himself pure. The Lord will show us His ways and enlighten us to His truths. When we live righteously, the Lord will give us that light.

2. When we pray for enlightenment

Another thing we can do is to pray for enlightenment. David prayed for enlightenment when he was going through a difficult time (Psalm 13:3). He humbly asked the Lord to enlighten his eyes spiritually. When light comes, we can trust in Him and rejoice in Him even more.

3. When we seek to understand His word

Another source of light is the word of God. There will come light from the Lord’s word to dispel the darkness in our life. His word is a lamp to our feet and a light to our path (Psalm 119:105). The challenge is for us to read and know His word.

Perhaps, you are struggling with darkness that permeates your heart and mind. Maybe, there are all kinds of negative thoughts and feelings that you are struggling with. Let’s exercise faith in seeking Him for that light. Let’s seek light from His word. Let’s seek Him till light dispels our darkness.
