Israel His Dominion

Psalm 114 is a reflection of God’s work in Israel’s history and the challenge to stand in awe of Him. The Psalmist sought to ponder over the history of Israel when they came out of Egypt.

1. The Lord’s great Dominion

When Israel went out of Egypt, the house of Jacob from a people of strange language, Judah became His sanctuary and Israel His dominion.”   Psalm 114:1-2

The house of Jacob was only 70 people when they went to Egypt (Exo. 1:1-5). Through the Lord’s mercies, it became the great nation of Israel. They were more than 600,000 people strong when they came out of Egypt (Num 2:32). Israel was delivered from bondage from a people with a strange language. She did not have good memories of being in captivity in Egypt. It was the Lord who brought 10 great plagues upon the nation of Egypt and powerfully brought His people out. He sought to establish His dominion over His people. Judah became His sanctuary. It was the leading tribe.  This was the one where it was prophesised that the Messiah would come forth from (Gen. 49:10). The Lord had exercised tremendous authority and power over His people. He had absolute control over Israel.

2. The Lord’s great Power

The sea saw it and fled; Jordan turned back.”  Psalm 114:3

What ails you, O sea, that you fled? O Jordan, that you turned back?”   Psalm 114:5

The Lord’s power can be seen in how He opened up the Red Sea and the River Jordan. God made a way for the people of Israel to cross the Red Sea. The Psalmist cleverly personified them. It was as if the Psalmist was asking them concerning why they were retreating. The Red Sea looked like it was running away and opening up. The River Jordan looked like it was turning back. These were expressions of the Lord’s awesome power at work. Let’s truly seek to appreciate the great authority and power of the Lord and to stand in awe of Him.
