But To Your Name Give Glory

GIVING ALL GLORY TO GOD’S NAME

Psalm 115 is a psalm about giving all glory to the Lord and not to useless idols. The Psalmist did a comparison between the glory of God versus the glory of idols. There were those who gloried in their idols. They attributed their success to the idols they worshipped. The psalmist took exception to this.   He sought to give all glory to the Lord.

Not unto us, LORD, not unto us, but to Your name give glory.”  Psalm 115:1

He stated it twice to show how determined he was in doing this. He wanted to give praise to the Lord’s name. The name of God represents all that He is and what He has done. Psalm 115 began with a strong desire to solely glorify the Lord’s name.

REASONS TO GIVE ALL GLORY TO A GREAT GOD

What were the Psalmist’s reasons for giving glory only to the Lord and His name?

1. Because of the Lord’s great mercy and truth

Because of Your mercy, because of Your truth…”  Psalm 115:1

a. His mercy

The Psalmist was able to recognise that it is because of His mercy that all blessings come from God. It is out of the Lord’s mercy that He delivered His people. There was special appreciation of the Lord’s mercy in being mindful of him and His people (Psalm 115:12.)

b. His truth

The Psalmist was also able to see that the Lord’s truth would always stand. He had come to appreciate how God is a God of truth. He would always establish His truth. God’s mercy and truth would very often go together. Psalm 108:4 speaks of how God’s mercy is great above the heavens and His truth reaches to the clouds.

2. Because of the Lord’s great sovereignty

Why should the Gentiles say “So where is their God?  But our God is in heaven; He does whatever He pleases.” Psalm 115:2

The Psalmist was not afraid of the taunting of others who were questioning the existence of God and their lack. He was fully certain that the Lord was in heaven, sitting on His throne. He had absolute authority over all things. He is far greater than any man-made idol that cannot do anything (Psalm 115:4-8). Our challenge is to give all glory to God for His great sovereignty.
