I Will Not Leave You

2012 photoblog_cherie_nodo1“NO8DO” is an emblem that can be seen all around the Spanish city of Seville. According to Wikipedia, “The motto is a rebus, combining the Spanish syllables (NO and DO) and a drawing in between of the figure “8”. The figure represents a skein of yarn, or in Spanish, a “madeja”. When read aloud, “No madeja do” sounds like “No me ha dejado”, which means “It [Seville] has not abandoned me”.” [1]

During my trip, the tour guide explained the legend behind this symbol. King Alfonso X, also known as El Sabio (English: “the Wise”), was involved in a civil war when his second son, Sancho, decided to usurp the throne. Seville was one of the few cities that stood with him and remained loyal to him. As such, they were rewarded with these words.

Today, this symbol can even be found on the most ordinary things, like street signs, tiled walls, drain covers, buses and even on Christopher Columbus’ tomb.

When I heard and saw this, I was immediately reminded of what God said to Joshua, the next leader of the people of Israel, after Moses passed on.

“…as I was with Moses, so I will be with you. I will not leave you nor forsake you. Be strong and of good courage…”
– Joshua 1:5b-6a

God was with Moses for 40 years. During this time, he overcame personal struggles and fears, led the people out from of the oppression of Egyptian rulers and brought them through the wilderness towards the Promised Land, all the while learning to trust God for His provision.

Now, Joshua was to lead the people of Israel into the Promised Land, but there were many battles to be fought and challenges to overcome. This was God’s promise to be with Joshua, just as He was with Moses, so he would be with him, no matter what he had to go through.

When things get tough and I feel all alone, often, my fears will start to creep into my heart and thoughts. I would feel discouraged by my circumstances and be uncertain about my choices.

But one of my greatest comforts is in knowing that Someone is standing by. I am reminded not to wallow in self pity, but remember God’s promise. God himself assures me that He will be there to comfort, support and guide me. His presence becomes a source of strength and courage to continue doing what I know I should and living the way He wants me to.
