A Blessed Lunar New Year

I would like to take this opportunity to wish everyone, “Blessed and Happy Lunar New Year!” We thank God for His manifold blessings upon our lives throughout the year. It is something that we do not want to take for granted. Yet, we recognise that life is hard and full of unexpected circumstances. We do not know what the Lunar New Year holds for us. Will God still bless us through the trials of life? The answer is a definite “Yes!”

Blessing through the trials of life

  1. King David wrote Psalm 3 in the context of facing the rebellion of his son, Absalom.
  2. Absalom, David’s nephew Joab and most of the nation rose up in conflict against him.
  3. It was confusing and painful for David to see his family members become his enemies.
  4. David reflected on this growing threat, “Lord, how they have increased who trouble me! Many are they who rise up against me.” (Psalm 3:1)
  5. The troubles and trials of life were increasing…many taunts were said against him (Psalm 3:2).
  6. Yet, David learnt to speak of God’s blessings through life’s difficulties.

Confidence in God’s blessing

1. Maintaining confidence in God

“But You, O Lord, are a shield for me, my glory and the One who lifts up my head.” (Psalm 3:3)

  1. David learnt to turn his focus back to the Lord.
  2. It was what the Lord had been for him.
  3. God was his shield…to give him protection.
  4. He was his glory…God’s glory was given to him.
  5. He was the lifter of his head…to help him rise again.
  6. David exercised his faith and went back to God again.
  7. He was able to maintain confidence in God.

2. Confidence in God’s blessing

  1. The blessing of prayers answered

“I cried to the Lord with my voice, and He heard me from His holy hill.” (Psalm 3:4)

    • Amid conflicts, David cried out to the Lord.
    • The Lord heard him from His holy hill.
    • The Lord will always hear our prayers.
    • We pray to find confidence in the Lord and His answers.
  1. The blessing of sustaining

“I lay down and slept; I awoke, for the Lord sustained me.” (Psalm 3:5)

    • One way to know that we have found confidence is by being able to sleep.
    • The trials of life often cause us to lose sleep and we remain awake at night.
    • When we are able to sleep in peace, confidence is regained.
    • To wake refreshed in the morning, knowing that the Lord had sustained us.
    • We are not overwhelmed with fear despite the many troubles of life.

Renewed assurance in the Lord’s blessings

“Salvation belongs to the Lord. Your blessing is upon Your people.” (Psalm 3:8)

Ultimately, salvation belongs to the Lord. He is our God, who is sovereign and all-powerful. We can be assured that God will bestow His blessing upon His people…upon all of us. While we may not know what the year ahead will hold for us, let us have every confidence and assurance that God will not be deterred from blessing us.
