Misgivings about God

All of us go through difference periods of life where we would have to learn to wait. Whether it is waiting for a job or for a promotion, we hope for better things in life. If these things are not forthcoming in our life as expected, we become discouraged and disappointed.

We may end up with misgivings about God. There may come doubts about God as to whether He is watching over us or not.

Through the prophet Isaiah, God raised the misgivings of the people of Israel, “Why do you say, O Jacob, and speak, O Israel: “My way is hidden from the Lord, and my just claim is passed over by my God”? (Isa 40:27) The people felt that God was no longer watching over them and that He was not responding to their pleas. The challenge was for Israel to rethink their understanding of God all over again.

Waiting upon the Lord

How can we learn to wait upon the Lord?

1. Rediscovering God

“Have you not known? Have you not heard? The everlasting God, the Lord, the Creator of the ends of the earth, neither faints nor is weary. His understanding is unsearchable.” (Isa 40:28)

It is vital that as we learn to wait upon the Lord, we should rediscover our understanding of God. God raised two rhetorical questions that implied that Israel should have known and should have heard about who God is already. They should return to the knowledge that had been revealed to them and to rediscover Him as the everlasting God. He is the Lord of all and the Creator of the ends of the earth. God is One who does not faint nor falter. There is no end to His understanding as it is unsearchable. Let us rediscover our great and awesome God.

2. Realising the power of God

“He gives power to the weak, and to those who have no might He increases strength. Even the youths shall faint and be weary, and the young men shall utterly fall,” (Isa 40:29,30)

As we wait and rediscover God, we can also realise the power of God. As man, we recognise how limited we are. No matter how much physical strength we may have, we would still faint and be weary. It is God who can give us the power to strengthen us. There will be times when we would fall and find it hard to get up. It is the power of God that will lift us up and increase our strength to carry on. Let us realise the power of God in our life as we wait on Him.

3. Renewing of strength

“But those who wait on the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles, they shall run and not be weary, they shall walk and not faint.” (Isa 40:31)

As we learn to wait upon the Lord, there would come the renewal of our spirit. The Lord will renew our strength. The prophet Isaiah provided expressions of what strength is. There is the image of an eagle soaring in the sky with its wings outstretched. This majestic expression of power should strengthen our spirit. Another expression is the runner who runs without allowing himself to be weary and to stop. The last expression is of one who walks and does not faint. Our journey of life is not an easy one. But the Lord renews our strength through His power in order for us to walk on. Let us be strengthened by the Lord as we wait upon Him.
