Knowing the Word of God is profitable

Do we truly appreciate the value of knowing the Word of God? This is a vital consideration as we recognise how challenging it is to know His Word. Reading, meditating and understanding the Scriptures takes time, effect and discipline. Knowing the Lord’s Word can be demanding as we are busy with numerous things each day. The danger of setting it aside daily is very real.

Yet, can we afford not to study the Word of God more diligently? The answer is a definite “No!” The worth of the Lord’s Word is extremely great and precious, and it is to be treasured above all other things. His Word is profitable for our life to be greatly blessed and enriched.

The inspired Word of God

“All Scripture is given by inspiration of God,” (2 Timothy 3:16)

  1. The Apostle Paul wrote of his great regard for the Lord’s Word to Timothy.
  2. The word “inspiration” suggests that God breathed over the Scriptures…the original text.
  3. God was involved in writing the Scriptures, His infallible and trustworthy Word.
  4. The Lord specially gave every word, phrase and sentence for our profit.
  5. The Word is for the blessing of all who read and understand it.

The Lord’s Word is profitable

“And is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness,” (2 Timothy 3:16)

1. Profitable for doctrine

  1. The Word of God is key to developing good and sound doctrine.
  2. Good doctrine becomes the foundational truths of our faith and life.
  3. It would also become a solid defence against false teachings that mean to deceive us.

2. Profitable for reproof

  1. The Lord’s Word is meant to rebuke and convict our hearts of that which is wrong.
  2. There is reprove and admonishment of our sins and faults.

3. Profitable for correction

  1. The word “correction” contains the idea of making things “straight”.
  2. The Word of God straightens the crooked things in our lives such as wrong teachings and bad conduct.

4. Profitable for instruction in righteousness

  1. The word “instruction” indicates the idea of chastening…to train and discipline.
  2. It is like a father chastening his son…to become more personally righteous.

The result of knowing the Scriptures

When we are serious about reading, studying and observing the Word of God daily, we will experience great worth and profit in becoming the man of God that we are meant to be (2 Timothy 3:17). We will grow more spiritual in all things and become spiritually mature. The Lord’s Word also helps us to be fully equipped for the work of the Lord. We will be fully trained and confident to do good work in our service to the Lord.

Let us be challenged to avoid being caught up with things that are not beneficial or worthwhile. Let us be challenged to know the Lord’s Word diligently, discerningly and deeply so that it would profit us by making us better servants for Him.
