A wise master builder

We thank God for this year’s Youth Conference theme…“A wise master builder”. The Apostle Paul set himself as an example of what a master builder should be in laying a foundation. (1 Cor 3:10) All of us were also challenged to be a master builder of our own foundation and house. The foundation is the Lord Jesus Christ Himself, “For no other foundation can anyone lay than that which is laid, which is Jesus Christ.” (1 Cor 3:11) He is the foundation of our faith and life. Let us be challenged to build our foundation well.

Building a foundation

The Lord Jesus Himself also challenged His disciples to build a strong foundation, “Therefore whoever hears these sayings of Mine, and does them, I will liken him to a wise man who built his house on the rock:” (Matt 7:24) The building of our foundation is done through hearing the Words of Christ. Our hearing of the Word should lead us to do it. Hearing and doing should go together. Both hearing and doing in the Greek are written in the present tense. This means that both actions are meant to be done in a continuous manner…as a way of life. If we practise this, then we would be able to establish a foundation that is like a house that is built on a rock. It will not fall when the storms of life come as it is founded on a rock. Let us be challenged to build our foundation as a solid rock.

The foundation of God

“Nevertheless the solid foundation of God stands, having this seal: “The Lord knows those who are His,” and, “Let everyone who names the name of Christ depart from iniquity.” (2 Tim 2:19) Paul wrote further about the establishing of this foundation. As he wrote to his spiritual son Timothy, he was addressing the problem of false teachers who taught profane and idle babblings, and have caused some of the brethren to stray and to overthrow the faith of others. (2 Tim 2:16–18)

If our foundation is a true foundation, it would be seen as a solid foundation of God. The word “solid” in Greek is “stereos” which means “steadfast, strong and firm”. It is an adjective to describe the foundation as strong and firm. It will stand steadfast and solid. It cannot fall away or falter in any way. If our foundation has been properly laid, it will continue to stand no matter what. This is called the foundation of God.

The seal of the foundation

Paul also spoke of the seal of the foundation. The seal is a reference to the seal of the Holy Spirit of promise who is the guarantor of our inheritance. (Eph 1:13,14) What does the seal state? Firstly, the Lord knows those who are His. We can be absolutely sure that we belong to the Lord. Secondly, the challenge is given to those who name the Name of Christ to depart from iniquity. We are to walk away from idle babbling and ungodliness. Through this seal of the foundation of God, let us be absolutely certain of our faith in the Lord.

The danger of not having a foundation

If our foundation is not a true foundation and we stray away and our faith is overthrown, then we never had a foundation in the first place. Christ and the Word of God were never established as our foundation. It would be a foundation that is of our own doing and not of God. If we have established a genuine foundation, we would never fall away. Let us ensure that Christ and His Word are established as part of our foundation…the foundation of God. Let us be totally assured in having this solid foundation of God for our faith, life and ministry.
