The Secret Place Of The Most High

The protection of the Lord

We live in a difficult and challenging world fraught with problems and dangers. Constantly, we are faced with evil, enemies and adverse situations. We recognise the vital need for protection, especially the protection of the Lord. Yet, we should not take His protection for granted as we tend to assume that God will protect us no matter what.

While the Psalmist wrote Psalm 91 meditating on the protection of the Lord, he described how we should draw closer to the Lord. It is uplifting to learn about dwelling in “the secret place of the Most High”.

The secret place

“He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.” (Psalm 91:1)

1. What the secret place is not

1. It is not a physical place.
2. It is not a literal place that you go to.

2. What is this secret place?

1. It is a spiritual place where you enter into the presence of God.
2. It is a dwelling place for us to meet with God.
3. It is a secret place where we can relate with God.
4. When we dwell in this secret place, we will abide under the great shadow of the Almighty.
5. He would specially protect us from all evil.

The presence of God

“I will say of the Lord, “He is my refuge and my fortress; My God, in Him I will trust.”” (Psalm 91:2)

1. The secret place is where we seek the presence of God.
2. It is to seek God’s face and to stand in awe of Him.
3. He is the “Most High”…sovereign over all things.
4. He is the “Almighty”…a great and mighty God.
5. He is our refuge…to keep us safe from all harm.
6. He is our fortress…to protect us from all evil and enemies.
7. As we draw nearer to God, He will draw nearer to us.
8. We will experience a greater sense of closeness with God.

When we are in this secret place, we will find faith and trust in the Lord.

A personal reality

“Because you have made the Lord, who is my refuge, even the Most High, your dwelling place,” (Psalm 91:9)

1. Dwelling in the secret place should not be understood as only theoretical.
2. It ought to be experienced as a personal reality.
3. It is when we have made the Lord our dwelling place that He will show His protection.
4. He will keep us from all evil and have His angels watch over us (Psalm 91:10,11).
5. The challenge is for us to take time to reside in the secret place of the presence of the Lord.
6. Let us abide in this dwelling place out of a heart of love for our Lord (Psalm 91:14).
7. It is where we would get to know the Lord more personally and deeply.

Let us be challenged to seek the Lord in our secret place and stand in awe of His presence.
