Fighting battles in life

As we venture through the journey of life, we would encounter battles to be fought. It is not easy having to deal with battle after battle. Weariness and discouragement can set in.

The Psalmist who wrote Psalm 118 had to face his fair share of battles. One thing that he learnt to do was to turn to God. He focused on the right hand of the Lord. How do we understand the right hand of the Lord?

1. The symbol of the right hand of God

“The right hand of the Lord does valiantly. The right hand of the Lord is exalted; the right hand of the Lord does valiantly.” (Ps 118:15,16)

The right hand is symbolic of one’s power. It is with the right hand that a right-handed person would hold the sword and do battle with. He can overcome the enemy with his right hand.

The right hand of God is symbolic of His awesome power. His right hand can mightily wield such great power to fight the battles for the Psalmist. God’s power is unmatched and unending. There is no one who has such power. All the power that God has is represented by His right hand.

2. The significance of the right hand of God

a. The right hand of God does valiantly

Valour is reflected when God battles with His right hand. There is no weakness or fear in the way God battles, only power and valour. He can overwhelm the enemy. This is the significant way in which God would do battle for His people.

b. The right hand of God is exalted

The other significance is one of victory. When a soldier is victorious, His right hand is lifted. The right hand of God is exalted over His enemies. It shows how God as the victor would celebrate. It reflects the victory that God has over His enemies.

Let us appreciate the significance of the right hand of Lord doing valiantly and being exalted.

3. The strength that the right hand of God gives

“The Lord is my strength and song, and He has become my salvation.” (Ps 118:14)

The Psalmist was able to see God becoming his strength in his battles. The power of God in His right hand helped him to fight his battles. He was able to see the right hand of God at work in his life. The Psalmist was personally able to experience this power. The Lord became his song of victory. He brought joy and uplift to his heart.

The right hand of God also delivered him from his enemies. The Lord became his salvation.  The Psalmist was able to give thanks for God’s salvation.

Let us be challenged to look to the power of God in His right hand. When we are faced with our battles, He can give us the strength to do battle and be victorious. No matter what kind of problems we may encounter, let us look to the Lord as our salvation, as our song. Let us depend on the right hand of the Lord to face the challenges of life.
