The amazing love of God

As we remember the death of the Lord Jesus this holy week, I’m touched all over again by the profundity of love that God demonstrated in giving us His Son to die for us.

The Apostle Paul described this profound love when he wrote about it in his epistle to the Christian brethren in Rome. This was a love that Paul had personally experienced for himself, and it was not a theoretical kind of love but a real, deep and impactful love that changed his life completely. How should we understand this profound love?

A deep and divine love

“For when we were still without strength, in due time Christ died for the ungodly.” (Romans 5:6)

1. When we were still without strength

a. This was Paul’s way of describing how weak man is in this world.
b. Man is enslaved by the power of sin.
c. He is extremely weak spiritually.
d. There is no strength to overcome sin.
e. He is characterised by ungodly ways.

2. God’s deep love manifested through the death of Christ

a. Paul highlighted that the Lord Jesus came into this world to die for the ungodly.
b. But the ungodly would not receive His offer of salvation and rejected it.
c. Nevertheless, the Lord Jesus died for them, displaying a profound kind of love.
d. It is a love that is divine…that can only come from God.

The significant difference between God’s love and human love

“For scarcely for a righteous man will one die; yet perhaps for a good man someone would even dare to die.” (Romans 5:7)
1. Paul made the love of God that much more significant by contrasting it with man’s love.
2. It is extremely difficult for a man to die for another.
3. Naturally, he is made to live and survive rather than to die.
4. It is rare for a man to give his life for a righteous or good man.
5. It takes great courage and love.
6. It is even more unlikely for a man to lay down his life to save an evil person.
7. Yet, the Lord sought to die for the ungodly.

The demonstration of God’s supreme love

“But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” (Romans 5:8)
1. The great love of God is demonstrated through the death of Christ.
2. He sacrificed Himself for all sinners…for all of us while we were still sinners.
3. This was the greatest display of love for man who lives in sin and evil.
4. He came to redeem our souls from the power of darkness.
5. This is love at its finest…this is unparalleled.
6. Let us be deeply moved by the love of God all over again this Easter.

Let us be challenged to greatly appreciate and be thankful for the supreme love of God.
