The profound plan of God concerning Christ
As we celebrate Easter this year, let us consider the Lord Jesus, who is central to God’s plan of salvation. God had a special plan for the Lord Jesus. The Apostle Peter had the privilege of following the Lord Jesus and learning from Him. There were many times when he and his fellow disciples did not comprehend God’s plan for the Lord Jesus. They had to be corrected numerous times. But when Peter wrote his letter to those in the Diaspora, there was understanding, depth and appreciation concerning God’s plan for Christ.
A profound plan
“He indeed was foreordained before the foundation of the world,” (1 Peter 1:20)
- Peter wrote earlier, “Elect according to the foreknowledge of God…” (1 Peter 1:2).
- The word “foreknowledge” in Greek is “prognosis”, where we get the English word “prognosis”. This is the noun form.
- God has foreknowledge as He is all-knowing…He is omniscient.
- The same root word in the verbal form “proginosko” can also mean “foreordain”, as we see here (1 Peter 1:20).
- God had foreknowledge concerning the Lord Jesus.
- He also foreordained the Lord Jesus to fulfil His plans for Him.
- It reveals that before the foundation of the world, God’s plan for the Lord Jesus was already foreknown and foreordained.
- This is truly a profound plan.
A plan to reveal the Person of the Lord Jesus
“But was manifest in these last times for you…” (1 Peter 1:20)
- The word “manifest” in Greek is “phaneroo”, which means to reveal or show.
- Once, this plan was hidden but it is now revealed.
- It is a plan to reveal the Person of the Lord Jesus and His works.
- This is a reference to all that Peter had written about the Lord Jesus before.
- There was the sprinkling of the blood of Christ (1 Peter 1:2).
- We have a living hope through the resurrection of Christ (1 Peter 1:3).
- Christ has given us redemption through His blood (1 Peter 1:18,19).
- The challenge for us is to see, understand and appreciate the Person of the Lord Jesus manifested.
Personal faith and hope in God
“Who through Him believe in God, who raised Him from the dead and gave Him glory, so that your faith and hope are in God.” (1 Peter 1:21)
How should we respond to the revealed plan of the Person of Christ? It is to have a personal faith and hope in God. We start with believing in God through the Lord Jesus, who taught about Him and exemplified what He is like. Our faith can keep growing as we increase our knowledge of God. Our living hope should be kept thriving as we focus on Him, who raised Christ from the dead to overcome death. God gave full glory to Christ as our Risen Saviour and glorious King who reigns with Him.
This Easter, let us stand in awe of God’s profound plan concerning the Lord Jesus, who was foreknown and foreordained. Let us cherish the Person of the Lord Jesus and all that He did for us. Let us continue to strengthen our faith and hope in God through the Lord Jesus Christ.
