Facing a world that is lacking peace

One key thought when we think of Christmas is the hope of peace. When Christ came into this world, He came to bring peace. But we are living in a world that is increasingly lacking peace. It is a troubled and challenging world. Some are finding it harder to have peace of mind and heart. Many are greatly concerned about their mental wellness, as the stresses and problems of life can bring about discouragement, feelings of being overwhelmed and even depression.

The Lord Jesus challenged His disciples as they faced His imminent death, “Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.” (John 14:27) He knew that His departure would cause His disciples to be deeply distraught and fearful. The challenge was for them to find peace in facing life’s difficulties.

The temporal peace of the world

“Not as the world gives do I give to you.” (John 14:27)

  1. The Lord Jesus taught that the world offers a certain kind of peace.
  2. The peace of the world
    1. It is temporal and does not last.
    2. It is inadequate, weak and helpful in a limited way.
  3. Today, peace comes as we are distracted for a while, like eating, doing sports and more.
  4. Some may turn to things such as “meditation” to feel at “peace”, and their troubles seem to go away but only for a moment.
  5. Let us avoid the world’s kind of peace.

The epitome of peace

  1. The Lord Jesus exemplified what true peace is.
  2. He came into this world as the Prince of Peace (Isaiah 9:6).
  3. He lived, ministered and ruled with peace.
  4. The Lord Jesus epitomised peace in life and ministry.
  5. He was full of peace and consistently displayed it in all that He did.
  6. No matter what He was going through, the Lord Jesus faced it with peace.
    1. When the Lord Jesus and His disciples went through a violent storm in a boat, He was sleeping peacefully.
    2. When He experienced much suffering in facing the crucifixion and death, He displayed tremendous peace.

The promise of the peace of Christ

“Peace I leave with you, My peace I give to you;” (John 14:27)

  1. The source of true peace comes from the Lord Jesus.
  2. He promised this blessing of peace to His disciples…to reassure and comfort them.
  3. As the Lord Jesus was leaving His disciples, He sought to leave His peace with them.
  4. This peace gives us spiritual stillness and calmness of heart as we face the storms of life.
  5. If we learn to follow the Lord’s example, we will be able to have true peace.
  6. Let us focus on the Lord and remember how He manifested peace in all situations.
  7. Let us receive this gift of peace that will cause our hearts not to be troubled or afraid.

We thank God for the glorious example of the Lord Jesus in displaying peace. He shows us the way of peace in life and ministry. This Christmas, no matter what we are going through, let us be challenged to find true peace in the Lord Jesus, which only He can give.
