The knowledge of the righteous

The words that we speak often reflect our knowledge. If we are filled with only human knowledge, then our words will only reflect human understanding and wisdom. But if we are filled with knowledge that is righteous, then we would be able to speak with the mouth of the righteous. What we say would reflect the Lord’s righteousness.

How can we learn to speak with the mouth of the righteous? In Proverbs, King Solomon revealed some vital insights.

1. It starts with knowledge

“And the knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.” (Proverbs 9:10)

a. This knowledge includes Biblical knowledge.
b. It involves learning of the knowledge of God, the Holy One.
c. There is also a need to grow in our knowledge of life.

2. Understanding

a. Through knowledge, there will come understanding (Proverbs 9:10).
b. It involves understanding God and His ways more deeply.
c. There is a greater understanding of the life of righteousness that we should live out.

3. Wisdom

“Wisdom is found on the lips of him who has understanding.” (Proverbs 10:13)

“But a man of understanding has wisdom.” (Proverbs 10:23)

a. Through understanding, there comes wisdom.
b. We would have the wisdom to discern and to determine things spiritually.
c. There comes the wisdom to speak good and righteous words.

Filling ourselves with knowledge

1. The knowledge of God and His Word are meant to feed and nourish us…“The Lord will not allow the righteous soul to famish.” (Proverbs 10:3) Our souls would not become famished.

2. The wise would store up knowledge…“Wise people store up knowledge.” (Proverbs 10:14) It is not just about knowing and understanding but also about storing knowledge that we can depend on. Let us continue to be fed and filled with the knowledge of God.

The mouth of the righteous

When we have a good store of knowledge, understanding and wisdom, then we would be able to speak with the mouth of the righteous and bring forth wisdom (Proverbs 10:31). This is the voice of wisdom. What is the significance of having the mouth of the righteous?

  1. It is a source of life to others…“The mouth of the righteous is a well of life.” (Proverbs 10:11)
  2. There is the use of refined and valuable words…“The tongue of the righteous is choice silver.” (Proverbs 10:20)
  3. It nourishes many with uplifting words…“The lips of the righteous feed many.” (Proverbs 10:21)
  4. It speaks only that which is good, right and acceptable to all…“The lips of the righteous know what is acceptable.” (Proverbs 10:32)
  5. It also has the wisdom to restrain one’s lips lest he falls into sin with many words…“In the multitude of words sin is not lacking, but he who restrains his lips is wise.” (Proverbs 10:19)

Let us be challenged to develop a good store of knowledge, understanding and wisdom. Let us be challenged to speak with the mouth of the righteous…to be the voice of wisdom.
