Everyone needs help

Life is full of challenges and difficulties. Though we often try and face these difficulties on our own, we learn through experience that we can fail in overcoming our problems. It is crucial that we recognize our need for help.

Warning against trusting in the limited help of man

Should we look for help from man? According to the Psalmist, the answer is “No!” He gave a warning, “Do not put your trust in princes, nor in a son of man, in whom there is no help.” (Ps 146:3) The Psalmist must have had some disappointments in trusting in “princes” and “man” before. He felt that there is no help from man…whether he is a prince or not.

Man’s help is at best limited as he cannot be depended on totally. The frailty of life reveals, “His spirit departs, he returns to his earth; in that very day his plans perish.” (Ps 146:4) Man will die sooner or later. The plans that he has will die with him. He cannot be relied on always. Let us not place our trust in man.

The blessing of trusting in the powerful help of God

“Happy is he who has the God of Jacob for his help, whose hope is in the Lord his God,” (Ps 146:5) The Psalmist found great joy and blessing in trusting the God of Jacob. His help is totally reliable. The Psalmist learned to place his hope on God and His help and he was not disappointed.

Why is the Lord and His help so trustworthy? As Creator, the Lord has the power to create all things, ‘Who made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that is in them;” (Ps 146:6) With all the power that He possesses, He is certainly able to help us. Also, He is One who reigns forever. (Ps 146:6,10) His help is always available and is not limited.

The various ways in which God can help (Ps 146:6-9)

What are some of the ways in which God shows His help wonderfully?

  1. He is one who keeps truth
  2. He executes justice for the oppressed
  3. He provides food to the hungry
  4. He gives freedom to the prisoners
  5. He opens the eyes of the blind
  6. He brings uplift and raises those who are downtrodden
  7. He specially loves the righteous
  8. He watches over the strangers;
  9. He relieves the fatherless and widow;
  10. Yet He will turn upside down the ways of the wicked.

It is so marvellous to see how God seeks to help us…to help us with all of our many different needs. He is God who truly cares and loves us.

Responding with great praise to the Lord

In view of who God is and the kind of help that He gives, the Psalmist responded, “Praise the Lord! Praise the Lord, O my soul! While I live I will praise the Lord; I will sing praises to my God while I have my being.” (Ps 146:1,2) Let us truly appreciate the Lord for who He is and the help that He gives. Let us trust in the Lord and find great joy in praising Him.
