Another year of learning from the Lord’s Word

A Blessed and Happy New Year to all! As we enter into another exciting year, let us look forward to learning more from the Lord’s Word. We want to go deeper in our understanding of the Scriptures. But our knowledge of the Word of Christ should be more than just theoretical and academic. It should deeply impact our lives in more ways than one.

The Apostle Paul wrote to the Colossian church with a vital challenge concerning the Word of Christ, “Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom.” (Colossians 3:16) How should we approach the Lord’s Word?

The challenge for the Word of Christ to dwell in us

1. Understanding the Word of Christ

  1. This refers to the teachings of Jesus.
  2. The Lord Jesus taught much about Himself…His Person to the disciples.
  3. The Doctrine of the Person of Christ was being attacked as Paul wrote to the Colossian church.
  4. Paul was defending what the Lord Jesus had taught about Himself.

2. The indwelling of the Lord’s Word

  1. The word “dwell” in Greek is “enoikeō”, which means “to reside in, to live in”.
  2. The Word of Christ should reside and live in us.
  3. All the teachings concerning Christ and His Person should dwell richly in us.
    • Through memorising the Lord’s Word
    • Through understanding and meditating on it
    • Through imbibing the Lord’s Word into our lives
  4. There is much wisdom in the words and teachings of Christ.
  5. It is His wisdom that should permeate all areas of our lives.

The impact on life and ministry

“Teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.” (Colossians 3:16)

1. Expressions

  1. When the Word of Christ lives richly in us, it ought to be clearly manifested.
  2. We will be able to teach others great words of wisdom.
  3. We will able to warn one another with the Word and wisdom of the Lord.

2. Means

  1. Psalms, hymns and spiritual songs will be used to teach such wisdom.
  2. These are written based on the Lord’s Word.
  3. They can be used as part of the music ministry to bring an uplift to the heart.

3. Manner

How should we sing?

  1. With the Word of Christ dwelling in us, we will experience much grace in our hearts.
  2. We will be able to sing with grace flowing out of our hearts.
  3. It is the beautiful outworking of the Word of Christ in our life and ministry.

Let us be challenged to make it our goal to let the Word of Christ dwell richly in us and to see it impacting our life and ministry in 2024.
