Commencing our 51st year of ministry

We thank God for His wonderful blessings over the last 50 years. But what should our focus be as we enter into our 51st year of ministry? One thing that we ought to seek is the goodness of the Lord. How should we understand the goodness of the Lord? The Psalmist David provided us with some deeper insights concerning the goodness of the Lord.

The goodness of the Lord

“Oh, how great is Your goodness, which You have laid up for those who fear You, which You have prepared for those who trust in You in the presence of the sons of men!” (Psalm 31:19)

1. God’s goodness

  1. It stems from the Person of God.
  2. It is one of His divine attributes.
  3. The Lord is full of goodness.

2. Abounding in goodness (Exodus 34:6)

  1. God has a great immensity of goodness.
  2. There is no end to His goodness.

3. Great goodness expressed

  1. The expressions of God’s goodness are often in the form of physical blessings.
  2. Some expressions that were highlighted by David
    1. Protection….“You shall hide them in the secret place of Your presence” (Psalm 31:20)
    2. Preservation…“For the Lord preserves the faithful” (Psalm 31:23)
    3. Kindness…“For He has shown me His marvellous kindness in a strong city” (Psalm 31:21)
  3. These are some of the many blessings that are seen as God’s great goodness.

What the Lord has prepared for us

  1. Will the Lord continue to show His goodness to us over the next year…the next 50 years? The answer is “Yes!”
  2. The great goodness of the Lord is something that the Lord has hidden in the heavens.
  3. There is so much more of the Lord’s goodness that has been laid up for us, waiting to be revealed.
  4. The Lord has specially prepared His goodness for us.
  5. This great goodness is reserved for us and it will be revealed one day.

Those whom God will reveal His goodness

  1. We recognise that God’s goodness is not something that is given unconditionally.
  2. David wrote that His goodness is prepared for those who fear the Lord in life and worship.
  3. It is also given to those who trust in the Lord for all their needs and in going through life’s difficulties.
  4. Let us be challenged to fear and trust the Lord so that He may continue to reveal His great goodness to us.

Manifested in the presence of the sons of men

The goodness of the Lord will be seen in our lives and will be evident to all around us. The Lord has specially prepared and reserved His great goodness for all of us, individually and as a church. Let us give our utmost reverence to the Lord and our complete trust in Him as we enter into our 51st of ministry.
