The temporal glory of man

When we consider the glory of man, there is really nothing to speak of. No matter what we have achieved or gained in life, if we were to step back and take an objective look at our lives, we would see how frail and transient our life is. This was what the Apostle Peter wrote of, “All flesh is as grass, and all the glory of man as the flower of the grass. The grass withers, and its flower falls away,” (1 Peter 1:24) The glory of man is likened to the life of the grass and the flowers. No matter how beautiful the grass or the flowers may be, they will die all too soon. Within a very short time, they will wither and they will be no more. That is the glory of the grass and the flower. It is only temporal. It is the same for the glory of man. Let us recognise how transient the glory of man is.

The glory of the Word

The glory of the Word stands in contrast to the glory of man. How can we see the glorious work of the Lord’s Word?

1. In salvation

“Having been born again, not of corruptible seed but incorruptible, through the word of God…” (1 Peter 1:23)

We have a glorious gospel that offers salvation to man. It is through the agency of the Word of God that we can be born again. This new life is given to us when we have faith in the Lord Jesus. We are born of an incorruptible seed…the seed of Christ. This seed is not the corruptible one which is of the flesh. Let us appreciate how the Lord’s Word begins its glorious work at salvation.

2. In sanctification

“Since you have purified your souls in obeying the truth through the Spirit.” (1 Peter 1:22)

The Word of God also brings about the sanctification of our lives. The truth is found in the Scriptures. When we obey the truth of the Word, we will also see our souls being purified. This sanctification work is done through the Spirit of God. The Word of God and the Holy Spirit always work hand in hand.  Let’s seek to be sanctified by the glorious work of the Word of God.

3. In sincere love

“In sincere love of the brethren, love one another fervently with a pure heart,”  (1 Peter 1:22)

The Word of God will bring about changes in our life. Through the Spirit, there will come a genuine love for the brethren. This is not a hypocritical kind of love but one that is truly sincere. We would have a fervent love for the brethren out of a pure heart. What a glorious work the Word of God can do in our life.

4. In the perpetuation of the Word

Ultimately, we see the glory of the word of God in how it endures forever, “But the word of the Lord endures forever.” (1 Peter 1:24) It will not fail. It will continue to live and abide forever, “Through the word of God which lives and abides forever,” (1 Peter 1:23) The glory of the Word, which is permanent, truly stands in contrast to the glory of man which is temporal. Let us truly appreciate the glorious work of the Word of God in our lives. Let us not focus on the glory of man…what we can achieve in life which is so brief. Let’s appreciate the glory of the Word which will last forever.
