The example of the Lord Jesus of being empowered to minister

There is no greater example than the Lord Jesus as One who had been empowered by the Holy Spirit to serve. He displayed such great power as He was filled with the Spirit. As servants of the Lord, it is vital that we too are empowered by the Spirit of God. There are a few things that we want to appreciate about how the Lord Jesus was empowered.

1. The Person of Christ

The life of the Lord Jesus was being specially prepared to minister for God. In the wilderness, Jesus would have been much in prayer…for 40 days and night. (Luke 4:1–13) He was most conscious of the Lord’s Word as He was able to make reference to it when Satan attacked Him. The life of the Lord Jesus was very much guided by prayer and the Word of God. Who we are as a person would determine whether we would be empowered.

2. Prophecy fulfilled

“And He was handed the book of the prophet Isaiah. And when He had opened the book, He found the place where it was written:” (Luke 4:17, Isaiah 61:1,2)

The Word of God was very much a part of the life of Christ. When He was in the synagogue and He read from the book of Isaiah about Himself as the Messiah being anointed with the Holy Spirit, He fulfilled prophecy. The Word of God became a great basis for His life and ministry. Let us make the Lord’s Word the basis for our life and ministry too.

3. The power of the Holy Spirit

The Lord Jesus was specially ordained by the Spirit of God when He was baptised by John the Baptist. (Luke 3:22) Jesus was already filled and led by the Spirit when He entered into the wilderness experience. (Luke 4:1) On His return, He was that much more empowered by the Holy Spirit. (Luke 4:14) It was the Holy Spirit that anointed the Lord Jesus for ministry, “The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me, because He has anointed Me” (Luke 4:18) Let us seek the empowering of the Holy Spirit.

4. The people to be ministered to

The Lord Jesus was specially empowered by the Holy Spirit to minister to people with many different needs. There were the poor, the broken-hearted, the captives, the blind and those who were oppressed. (Luke 4:18,19) No matter what circumstancesthe people were in, the Lord Jesus was able to meet their spiritual needs as He was empowered to minister to them. In the same way, it is only with the power of the Holy Spirit that we would be able to minister to people with their various needs.

5. The purpose of being empowered

There was a great sense purpose to what He was called to do. There is the use of the “Greek infinitive” forthe task that the Lord Jesus was meant to fulfil. It indicated a sense of purpose. The Lord Jesus was to preach the gospel, to heal, to proclaim liberty, to give sight and to set free the captives. (Luke 4:18,19) All these different purposes are part of the spiritual works that Jesus was anointed by the Spirit of God to do. Let us be inspired and challenged by the Lord’s example in how He was empowered by the Holy Spirit to serve.

The empowering of the Holy Spirit should lead us to fulfil our purpose in life and ministry. Let us be challenged to seek the empowering of the Holy Spirit.
