The forgiveness of God

We thank God for His forgiveness. Despite our wretchedness and how many times we have sinned against Him, the Lord desires to forgive us. Yet, this is something that we tend to take for granted. We do not appreciate the gracious blessing of His forgiveness. We tend to gloss over our sins and not take them seriously in how we should deal with them. Let us be challenged to appreciate the blessing of God’s forgiveness.

The incredible blessing of experiencing complete forgiveness

“Blessed is he whose transgression is forgiven, whose sin is covered. Blessed is the man to whom the Lord does not impute iniquity, and in whose spirit there is no deceit.” (Psalm 32:1,2)

  1. King David wrote a psalm to appreciate the amazing blessing of God’s forgiveness.
  2. God’s full forgiveness was given for all the sins that he had committed.
  3. All the different sins in our lives can be dealt with fully.
    1. Transgression, which is the sin of commission, is forgiven.
    2. Sin, which is the sin of omission, is covered.
    3. Iniquity is not imputed. Iniquity refers to the evil intent behind our transgression and sin.
  4. The challenge is to go deeper and appreciate that God desires to forgive us fully…not only our sins and transgressions but also our iniquities.
  5. Then we would have a spirit with no deceit…where we have nothing to hide and are freed of guilt.

Foolish not to address our sins

  1. However, David remembered a time when he did not deal with his sins (Psalm 32:3,4).
  2. It was the foolish approach of keeping silent that he had taken.
  3. What happened to him? The sins in his life affected him badly in more ways than one.
    1. David’s bones grew old…due to a guilty conscience.
    2. He groaned all day long…reflecting the distress that he felt.
    3. God’s hand was heavy on David…this reflected the chastening of the Lord.
    4. He had dryness of spirit…which is the effect of sin and he had lost all vitality.
  4. There is no blessing when we keep silent.

The wisdom of confessing all sins

  1. David had to learn the wisdom of bringing all his sins to the Lord: “I acknowledged my sin to You, and my iniquity I have not hidden. I said, ‘I will confess my transgressions to the Lord, and You forgave the iniquity of my sin.’” (Psalm 32:5)
  2. Humble acknowledgement of all sins to God
    1. David humbly brought all his sins, transgressions and iniquities before the Lord.
    2. He did not hide anything from God, knowing that nothing can be hidden from Him.
  3. God is ever ready to forgive
    1. When we confess, there is no condemnation…only His abundant love and grace are given. b. God desires to forgive readily.
    2. It is wise for us to ask for full forgiveness.
  4. Seek to make our confession promptly

“For this cause everyone who is godly shall pray to You in a time when You may be found;” (Psalm 32:6)

    1. Repentance should not be postponed to another day…to procrastinate.
    2. Many assume we can take our time, but we never know when the door will shut.
    3. Confession should be made swiftly, no matter how deep, dark, or painful.

Let us be challenged to bring all our sins to the Lord, and find relief and joy for our souls.
