The heart of the matter

A vital part of our spiritual walk with the Lord involves our heart. Whatever we set our heart on will become our focus and driving force in our life and ministry.

Problems of the heart

What are some serious problems we may have concerning the heart?

  1. A distracted heart…distracted by the things of the world.
  2. A deceived heart…thinking that our heart is well when it is not.
  3. A divided heart…divided by all the different things that draw us away from God.
  4. A proud heart…one that is lifted up and we end up forgetting the Lord.

These are some of the problems that can affect our heart.

When we set our heart on the wrong things (Deuteronomy 32)

In his song for Israel, Moses wrote of the things Israel had set their hearts on. What were they?

  1. Corrupted and perverse things
  2. Foolishness and unwise things
  3. Overly focused on physical things such as food, causing fatness and obesity
  4. Things that they relied upon as their rock, such as foreign gods…rather than God
  5. Drawing from the vine of Sodom and Gomorrah…a reference to great wickedness

The Lord had to deal with the heart of Israel concerning these problems of sin.

The cleansing of the heart

The prophet Isaiah helps us to understand how to seek deep cleansing for our heart.

1. Our part (Isaiah 1:16)

  1. Seek cleansing by washing ourselves
  2. Be challenged to make ourselves thoroughly clean
  3. Choose to put away the evil of our doings
  4. Cease to do evil
  5. Be challenged to do good and seek justice (Isaiah 1:17)

2. God’s part (Isaiah 1:18)

  1. The Lord’s Divine reasoning for us
  2. Though sins be as scarlet, they shall be white as snow
  3. Though they are red like crimson, they shall be as wool
  4. If we are willing and obedient, the Lord will bless (Isaiah 1:19).

The challenge to set the heart on God’s Word

“Set your hearts on all the words which I testify among you today,” (Deuteronomy 32:46)

  1. With clean hearts, we can set them fully on the Lord and His Word.
  2. It is a heart that has the highest regard for the Lord’s Word.
  3. A deep desire and love for God as our Father, our Rock and all that is written of Him.
  4. Nothing else should fill the heart and be regarded greater than the Lord’s Word.
  5. Our hearts ought to be challenged to observe God’s Word closely and not depart from it.

Our motivation (Deuteronomy 32:47)

  1. Setting our hearts on the Lord’s Word is not futile but most profitable and worthwhile.
  2. It has to do with our life, where we will be enriched and blessed abundantly.
  3. Our life will be filled with wisdom, understanding and spiritual depth.

Let us be challenged to seek deep cleansing for our heart and set it fully on God’s Word.
