Living in a crooked and perverse world

The world is a challenging place to live in. This was something that the Apostle Paul highlighted to the Philippian brethren. They were living in the midst of “a crooked and perverse generation.” (Phil 2:15) It was a world that was twisted and corrupted. There was deep darkness in the world.

The world that we live in today is no different. It is still very much a crooked and perverse generation. How do we live in this evil world as children of God?

Living as children of God

God desires for us as His children to live differently from the ways of the world.

1. The right spirit of serving

“Do all things without complaining and disputing,” (Phil 2:14)

Paul challenged the brethren to do their work without complaining or grumbling. A complaining spirit is the wrong spirit to have. We should also not end up always disputing with others…challenging each other. Let us cultivate the right spirit in serving effectively.

 2. The right way of living

“that you may become blameless and harmless, children of God without fault” (Phil 2:15)

As children of God, we want to live in the right way too. It matters how others see us…whether we are living a blameless life. Our actions should not in any way harm others. Our behaviour should also be without fault. This is the kind of life that befits a child of God. Let us be challenged to cultivate the right way of living as children of God.

Challenges to live in this world as children of God

1. The challenge to shine as lights

“among whom you shine as lights in the world,” (Phil 2:15)

One vital challenge is to shine as lights in the world. By the way we live and do things, we are meant to shine as light-bearers in this world of darkness. This echoes the teaching of the Lord Jesus about shining as lights in the world. (Matt 5:14) We ought to shine forth as lights to others that they may appreciate our good works and glorify our Father in heaven. (Matt 5:16) Let us be challenged to always shine as lights in the world.

2. The challenge to hold fast the Word of life

“holding fast the word of life,” (Phil 2:16)

Another crucial challenge is to always hold fast to the Word of life. The Word of God is full of life. It is life-giving. Through the Word of the gospel, there is eternal life. Going beyond the doctrine of salvation, as we continue to study and to hold on to the Word of life, it brings about revival and strength. The danger is to compromise on our regard for the Word of God and to set it aside for the ways of the world. It is only through holding fast to the Word of life that we can sustain being a light-bearer in this dark and perverse world. Let us be challenged to hold fast to the wonderful Word of life.

Let us be challenged to live and serve well as children of God in this crooked and perverse world.
