A way of life
Righteousness should not just be a concept or an understanding. It should be life-related. We should express righteousness in everything that we say or do. It should be practically applied in all aspects of our lives.
The author of Proverbs sought to demonstrate this in what he had written in Proverbs 10. He wrote in practical terms how righteousness should be manifested in our lives. Let us be challenged to understand righteousness more deeply and how it is related to our lives.
1. The fear of the Lord
“The fear of the Lord prolongs days, but the years of the wicked will be shortened.” (Proverbs 10:27)
- The righteous will reflect a sense of fear of the Lord.
- It is this fear of the Lord that causes them to live righteously.
- They will seek to guard against doing that which is wicked.
- As a result, their lives will be blessed with prolonged days.
- But the wicked will not fear God and will see their lives shortened in some instances.
2. Hope and expectation
“The hope of the righteous will be gladness, but the expectation of the wicked will perish.” (Proverbs 10:28)
- It is a natural thing to have hopes and expectations.
- The hope of the righteous is that the Lord will bless and enrich their lives.
- There will be gladness and joy in their journey of life.
- But for the wicked, there will be no blessings to hope for.
- They can expect to end with serious consequences, as they will perish.
3. Strength
“The way of the Lord is strength for the upright, but destruction will come to the workers of iniquity.” (Proverbs 10:29)
- The righteous will seek to walk in the way of the Lord.
- Their way is true, good and upright.
- The Lord will provide strength for those who journey on this righteous way.
- But the workers of iniquity will walk in the way that leads to destruction.
4. Stability in life
“The righteous will never be removed, but the wicked will not inhabit the earth.” (Proverbs 10:30)
- The righteous will find assurance and comfort in life.
- They will never be removed, and will remain steady and stable.
- But the wicked will not be blessed nor inhabit the earth.
5. Words
The righteous are wise in what they say. Their mouth will bring forth wisdom (Proverbs 10:31). They will speak good, acceptable and discerning words. But the wicked will speak evil, offensive and perverse words, which will lead to severe consequences. Let us be challenged to apply righteousness in all areas of our lives so that we may be greatly blessed as we walk in the way of the Lord.
