What a Retreat!

My heart is full as I recall the manifold blessings of God upon our 21st YAG Retreat. There were many awesome lessons taught by Pastor Charles at the Retreat that were deep and soul searching. The Retreat ended with many of us greatly challenged and encouraged.

The Great Commission is often not undertaken seriously and therefore remains unfulfilled in more ways than one. A reality check was necessary to assess as to where we stood concerning the Great Commission and what we should be working on in order to fulfill it. Many of us realized how much we lack in faith, understanding and devotion. It was crucial that we seek to do what is necessary to grow and develop ourselves further.

  1. A greater sense of consciousness of the Great Commission

“Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,  teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” (Matt 28:19-20)

When Pastor asked us for an honest appraisal of ourselves, he asked, among many other questions, how conscious we are of the Great Commission! We must admit that we are not as conscious as we should be. Our challenge is to be more consistent in being conscious and burdened for the many souls who still need to know the Lord Jesus.

I remember how conscious the Lord Jesus was about soul winning, “Behold, I say to you, lift up your eyes and look at the fields, for they are already white for harvest!” (John 4:35) Let us be challenged to be so much conscious of the Great Commission.

  1. A deeper devotion in being a disciple of the Lord

In the Retreat, the focus taught was not on how we should fulfill the Great Commission though it is not unimportant. The focus was on the person instead. The challenge is to be a true disciple of the Lord, “He said to them, “Whoever desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow Me.” (Mark 8:34) I appreciated the goals that Pastor raised for the place of discipleship in fulfilling the Great Commission.

Firstly, discipleship (among other things) is meant to address all the wrongs in our life. Through the Lord’s teachings of truth, we would have to deal with all the wrongs in our life that we may not be aware of. Secondly, it should strengthen the areas of our life that we are weak in. Through this retreat, we recognise that there may be many lacks in our life in terms of faith, knowledge, wisdom, courage and character and they need to be strengthened. Thirdly, we want to truly be a follower of the Lord Jesus so that we can be more like Him and see our lives changed. Let us seek to have a deeper devotion to being a disciple of the Lord.

  1. A determined search for the anointing of the Holy Spirit

The work of the Holy Spirit is most crucial to fulfilling the Great Commission. Our challenge is to seek the anointing of the Holy Spirit. We see how the Holy Spirit anointed the Lord Jesus for ministry, “The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me, because He has anointed Me to preach the gospel to the poor; He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted,” (Luke 4:18) In the same way, we should determinedly seek the Holy Spirit’s anointing. We want to relate to the Holy Spirit and seek His help consistently. We should seek to sense His leading and to follow Him. Let us be challenged to seek the anointing of the Holy Spirit. Let us be challenged to grow as disciples of the Lord that we may be able to work towards keeping the Great Commission.
