Finding inspiration

At the Family Camp, we were greatly challenged to live for Christ. But we also realised it is far more difficult than we thought. Living for Christ ought to be diligently and wisely applied in all aspects of life and service, an undertaking that requires tremendous effort. We need to find inspiration to live for Christ. Without inspiration, our lives would be insipid and weak. The challenge is having different sources of inspiration to encourage us to live for Christ.

Different sources of inspiration

There are two sources of inspiration that Paul wrote about for us to draw from.

1. Divine inspiration

a. The dynamic example of the Lord Jesus Christ (Philippians 2:5–8)
  1. The “riches to rags” story of the Lord Jesus was a divine and dynamic inspiration to Paul.
  2. The Lord Jesus was “rich” in form as He was equal with God…divine in every sense of the word.
  3. Yet, He demonstrated His mindset of great humility by making Himself of no reputation.
  4. He became “poor” by taking the form of a man and ministering as a lowly slave.
  5. He was obedient to the point of death on the cross, suffering profoundly.

The Lord’s inspiring example should drive us to have the same humble mindset in life and service.

b. The work of God

“For it is God who works in you both to will and to do for His good pleasure.” (Philippians 2:13)

  1. Another divine inspiration is to know that God works in us.
  2. It is incredible that God is working directly in our life.
  3. We recognise how weak our will is and we are unable to do what we are meant to.
  4. As we seek God concerning living for Christ, He will work within us to will.
  5. We would determine to say in our hearts, “I will live for Christ”.
  6. The Lord would also work in us to do what we have willed.
  7. We would see ourselves attempting to do what we have learnt…to live for Christ.

Let us be divinely inspired by God’s work in our life both to will and to do.

2. Human inspiration

a. Biblical
  1. Paul also found supportive, human inspiration from great examples around him.
  2. His spiritual son, Timothy, stood out as one who was like-minded in sincerely caring for the Philippian brethren (Philippians 2:19–24).
  3. With his proven character, he served alongside Paul as a son with his father.
  4. Another human inspiration to Paul was Epaphroditus, his fellow brother, worker and soldier who came close to death in his service to Paul (Philippians 2:25–30).

Let us be challenged by these Biblical and human inspirations to follow the Lord.

b. Present
  1. In Bethany, we thank God for Pastor Charles, who taught us profound truths about living for Christ and demonstrates it through his life and service for Him.
  2. We also thank God for many others in Bethany who stand out in how they follow Christ.

Let us be greatly challenged by divine and human inspirations to live for Christ.
