Growing A Storm-Proof Faith

Going through the storms of life

As we journey through life, God allows different challenges or some of which may be called “storms” into our life to test our faith. What is the level of our faith? Only when the “storms” of life test our faith would we be able to determine far more clearly which level we are at.

As the Lord Jesus and His disciples travelled on a boat in the sea of Galilee, a sudden storm arose to test the disciples’ faith. How did they fare in this test of life? The great windstorm and the beating waves filling the boat with water proved too overwhelming for these experienced fishermen (Mark 4:37).

The crippling problem of fear

  1. The natural response of the disciples was to be gripped by fear.
  2. They were panicking anxiously as they feared for their lives, that they would drown.
  3. In their fearful state, they sought to wake up the Lord Jesus, who was resting (Mark 4:38).
  4. They were only thinking about themselves as they did not think to let the Lord Jesus continue in His rest, who must have been very tired due to His ministry.
  5. They even went to the extent of rebuking the Lord Jesus for not caring (Mark 4:38).

Addressing our fears

  1. The Lord Jesus sought to address the fears of the disciples.
  2. He queried as to why they were so fearful (Mark 4:40).
  3. A deeper problem that the Lord highlighted was that they had “no faith” (Mark 4:40).
  4. The storm revealed how lacking they were in terms of faith to face such storms.
  5. They had been with the Lord for quite a while already and had gained knowledge of Him.
  6. Yet, the disciples still failed to apply their faith to overcome their fears.
  7. There was a need for the disciples to find a greater faith and apply it to face their fears.

Growing our faith

1. A wiser faith

  1. The disciples would have been wiser if they did not allow fear to get the better of them.
  2. To focus on the fact that the Lord Jesus did care for them as He had shown so much love and care already as He called, saved, nurtured, defended them and more.
  3. To be certain that the Lord would not allow Himself and them to perish in the storm.

2. A deeper faith

  1. To trust in the Lord Jesus, who has shown great authority and power over all diseases, demons and all things…that He would also have control over the storm and the sea (Mark 4:39).
  2. To look at the Lord who was peacefully sleeping through the storm (Mark 4:38).
  3. To follow the deep faith that the Lord had in God, who is sovereign over all things.

3. A stronger faith

  1. The challenge is to develop a stronger faith in the Lord Jesus in facing great challenges.
  2. To grow in courage and be unafraid of the “storms” of life that can be overwhelming.
  3. To develop a faith that is strong enough to match the “storms” of life.

Let us be challenged to grow a storm-proof faith and triumph over the difficulties of life.
