Practical righteousness
The theme of righteousness is emphasised in numerous texts in Proverbs 10. The author sought to make statements about righteousness that we should consider. Through these proverbs, Solomon taught practical righteousness that we would do well to understand and apply in our lives.
To emphasise the importance of righteousness, the statements are often contrasted with the opposite state of wickedness, to reveal the consequences of not following the way of righteousness. Let us be challenged to make righteousness an integral part of our lives.
1. The heart of the righteous
“The wise in heart will receive commands, but a prating fool will fall.” (Proverbs 10:8)
- A righteous man will have wisdom in his heart.
- His wisdom will cause his heart to be inclined to receiving the Lord’s commandments.
- The heart of the righteous will be filled with good commands to guide his life.
- He will not be like the prating fool who speaks foolishly and unrighteously.
- There is no wisdom in the heart of such a person.
2. Walking in righteousness
“He who walks with integrity walks securely, but he who perverts his ways will become known.” (Proverbs 10:9)
- A man’s walk in life reflects his lifestyle…his way of life.
- The challenge is to walk in righteousness.
- Integrity will be part of the way of life of a righteous man…being honest and truthful.
- This righteous man will be able to walk securely…to be safe and unmoved.
- In contrast, a man who perverts his ways will be exposed to danger.
- His perverted ways will become known.
3. Love towards others
“Hatred stirs up strife, but love covers all sins.” (Proverbs 10:12)
- A righteous man will have a heart of love…to show love to others.
- It is not easy to overlook the sins of others.
- But love can cover all sins…something challenging to do, yet it is the righteous thing to do.
- The opposite is to have hatred against those who sin against us.
- Such hatred will only cause strife among us.
4. The labour of the righteous
“The labour of the righteous leads to life, the wages of the wicked to sin.” (Proverbs 10:16)
- A righteous man will labour in a righteous manner…in how he works.
- As a result, there will be a life of blessings.
- But the wages of the wicked are to end in sin.
5. Keeping instructions
“He who keeps instruction is in the way of life, but he who refuses correction goes astray.” (Proverbs 10:17)
As we receive wise instructions, our challenge is to integrate them into our way of life. If the instructions were intended to correct us, we ought to accept them humbly. If we refuse such correction, we could end up going astray. Let us be challenged to understand these principles of practical righteousness and keep them diligently as our way of life.
