A memorable time of worship

Last Sunday’s morning worship will be specially remembered for a long while. It was the first time that we had our morning worship in the new sanctuary and it turned out to be a moving time of worship and learning. There was so much joy and praise in our worship of the Lord. We thank God for His wonderful provision of a new place of worship. Indeed, our hearts were full of the Lord and of thanksgiving to Him.

Approaching Mt Zion

A significant thought that was focused on was the idea of coming to Mount Zion.

“But you have come to Mount Zion and to the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, to an innumerable company of angels, to the general assembly and church of the firstborn who are registered in heaven, to God the Judge of all, to the spirits of just men made perfect, to Jesus the Mediator of the New Covenant, and to the blood of sprinkling that speaks better things than that of Abel.” (Heb 12:22-24)

The new sanctuary may be seen as representative of spiritual Mt Zion. This is where we have come to gather and to give our worship to the Lord.  There are a number of ways for us to understanding this idea of Mt Zion. Let me highlight a few of them.

1. The city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem

Mt Zion is the city that God lives in. Our citizenship is in this city. We have come to pledge our allegiance to the Lord’s spiritual Jerusalem. It is the heavenly city of Jerusalem and we are part of this spiritual city.

2. The general assembly and church of the firstborn who are registered in heaven

This is a reference to all believers who are part of the church. We are considered firstborn of God. We are joint heirs with Christ. (Rom 8:17) Our names are enrolled in heaven. There is a great sense of being part of the church…part of Bethany…part of Mt Zion.

3. God, the Judge of all

God dwells in heaven. He is the great and awesome judge. He will bring about judgment to all as judge. He dwells at Mt Zion where we are gathered. Let us stand in awe of the Lord…for He is a consuming fire.

4. Jesus the Mediator of the New Covenant

Coming to spiritual Mt Zion would not be possible if not for the Lord Jesus Christ who is our Mediator of the New Covenant. Through the shedding of His blood, He brought in the New Covenant. We are part of the New Covenant because of Christ. It was wonderful that we could celebrate Holy Communion at our first morning worship service. It is through the blood of Christ that gave us salvation. It was a moving time partaking of the Lord’s Supper.

Thank God that we can come to Mt Zion

By faith, we come to Mt Zion as citizens of the heavenly kingdom where God and angels are. We thank God, we can come to Mt Zion…to be part of the church of the firstborn through the blood of Christ. Let us always seek to deeply appreciate our new sanctuary each time we gather together for worship.  Let us come to spiritual Mt Zion to give glory and honour to our great and awesome God.
