An uplifting promise

In facing life’s harsh problems and difficulties, our hearts can be greatly distressed and discouraged. Feelings of despair may grip and cripple us, especially when we cannot clearly understand why we find ourselves in such troubling circumstances.

But the promises of God can provide a tremendous uplift to our dispirited hearts. The Apostle Paul wrote to the brethren in Rome a wonderful promise that should bring much encouragement to us, “And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose.” (Romans 8:28) How should we understand this comforting promise?

Fullness of knowledge and faith

  1. The word “know” in Greek is “oidamen” which reflects the certainty of knowledge and understanding.
  2. Paul’s fullness of knowledge came through having a depth of faith and experience.
  3. He wrote with a great sense of confidence in his understanding of God.

Let us be challenged to have the same fullness of knowledge and faith as Paul.

A significant promise of God

  1. God promised that “all things work together for good”.
  2. No matter what kind of adverse circumstance we may find ourselves in, everything will work together for our good.
  3. All part of God’s master plan
    • God has a sovereign plan for all of us in allowing us to go through the problems of life.
    • We may not fully understand what His wise plan is.
    • But God’s plan is always good, and His divine will is fulfilled for our good.
  4. God’s power at work
    • His awesome power will make all things good.
    • God will help us through the difficulties of life.
    • The power of God will ensure that all things will turn out for our good.

Those who would benefit from this promise

Who would benefit from this promise?

Those who love God

  1. God has shown His great love to us through the sacrifice of the Lord Jesus (Romans 5:8).
  2. Our response must be one of heart-felt love for our loving Father.
  3. This love should continue even when we go through the troubles of life.

Those who are called according to His purpose

  1. We have been called to salvation.
  2. We have also been called according to His purpose.
  3. In facing life’s challenges, God will work things out according to His purpose.
  4. It is comforting to know that God’s purpose will prevail for those who love Him.

Let us be uplifted in our hearts to know that God will always work things out for our good amidst life’s difficulties.
