The need for faith to face the challenges of life and ministry

As we experience the challenges of life and ministry, we recognize the need for faith in the Lord to overcome these challenges. The place of faith is absolutely vital for us to succeed in overcoming the difficulties of life. Yet there are times when we find ourselves unable to overcome the more significant challenges that may come our way. Let us cultivate a faith that is able to face the challenges of life.

 A faith that fell short

The disciples discovered their lack of faith when they had to face a man asking them to heal his epileptic son who was possessed by a demon. (Matt 17:14-18) They were unable to cast out the demon. As a result, the Lord Jesus rebuked them and called them a “faithless and perverse generation.” He was not only referring to the disciples but also the whole generation. They lacked faith as they had many doubts. They were still perverse in their ways.

The disciples recognized their failure and turned to their Master for understanding as to why they were unable to cast out the demon. The Lord Jesus answered them, “Because of your unbelief.” (Matt 17:20) The disciples continued to have the sin of unbelief. It affected the way in which they ministered. Their faith fell short of what was necessary to cast out the demon which the Lord Jesus did so with great authority and power.  Let us be challenged not to allow the problem of unbelief to affect our faith.

The potential of faith

“For assuredly, I say to you, if you have faith as a mustard seed.” (Matt 17:20)

The Lord Jesus explained to the disciples that what they needed was a faith like a mustard seed. The mustard seed is a very small seed. If the disciples had faith like a mustard seed, it had great potential.

What kind of faith did the disciples have already? They had a genuine faith which was based upon truth which the Lord Jesus had taught. It was faith that affected the life of the disciples…for they chose to leave all and to follow the Lord. This genuine faith led the disciples to live according to the ways of the Lord and to be of service to Him.

Yet the reality was that their faith was still very small…even smaller than the mustard seed. They should at least have faith the size of a mustard seed. Let us ensure that we have genuine faith that is taught by the Lord Jesus. Let us seek to grow our faith which has great potential to help us overcome the challenges of life.

The power of faith

“If you have faith as a mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move and nothing will be impossible for you.” (Matt 17:20)

In having this genuine faith, even though it may be the size of a mustard seed, we will have the power to move mountains. There is great power at work in having this faith. It can do the impossible. Nothing would be considered impossible to achieve with such a faith.

Let us seek to grow our faith and develop a greater sense of confidence in facing our challenges. We can go to God in prayer knowing that He will hear and do the impossible. This faith will give us the power to overcome our fears and doubts. Let us be challenged to develop our faith so that we can conquer the seemingly impossible challenges of life.
