Lessons of life

As we go through life, we must learn the right lessons. God desires to teach us vital lessons of life, but whether we choose to learn them is another thing. We can live through year after year and not learn the lessons God meant us to learn.

This is something that we observe in the history of Israel as Moses recorded his review of Israel. What can we learn from the history of Israel?

A theological review of life

“And you shall remember that the Lord your God led you all the way these forty years in the wilderness, to humble you and test you, to know what was in your heart, whether you would keep His commandments or not.” (Deut 8:2)

Moses wrote a theological review of Israel before they entered the promised land. He challenged the people of Israel to remember the 40 years that they journeyed through the wilderness. It was God who led them through the wilderness. What was His purpose?

  1. It was to humble them. Israel was too proud and did not listen to the Lord. They needed to be humbled.
  2. It was to test them. The wilderness experience was God’s way of testing Israel.
  3. It was to reveal the heart of Israel. God was testing the heart of Israel, to reveal what was indeed in their heart, whether they would keep His commandments or not.

The humbling work of God

“So He humbled you, allowed you to hunger, and fed you with manna which you did not know nor did your fathers know,” (Deut 8:3)

The Lord humbled Israel through making them hungry and to provide them manna in the wilderness. It was something that the forefathers, the previous generation had already experienced, but they did not learn the right lessons. In the current generation, these lessons had to be relearnt. They had to be tested again and to be humbled so that they may learn the right lessons.

A Biblical code of life

“that He might make you know that man shall not live by bread alone; but man lives by every word that proceeds from the mouth of the Lord.” (Deut 8:3)

The vital lesson that Israel should learn was God’s Biblical code of life for them. The code is that man should not live by the material things of life, such as bread alone. The more vital understanding of life is that man should live by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God. Every single word of God is of utmost importance. Israel was to feed on the Word of God, which was meant to give them life.

It is this Biblical code of life that we should learn to live by too. Each day, we should live by every word that has proceeded from God. We should learn to feed on the Word of God. His Word would provide us with enlightenment and wisdom to live our lives wisely and righteously. When the Lord tests us, we will choose to live by His Word and obey it.

As we begin another year, do we have a Biblical code of life to live by? Let us be challenged to live by this Biblical code that man should live by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God, and to obey His commandments every day.
