A Second Word Of Warning

Text: Colossians 2:8

We have a second word of warning to beware false teachings in the following text. The first word of warning was sounded in Colossians 2:4.

“Beware lest anyone cheat you through philosophy
and empty deceit, according to the tradition of men,
according to the basic principles of the world, and
not according to Christ.”

1. “Beware”

a) This word is derived from the word “see”.
b) The word “see” has an applied idea.
c) The resultant idea is “beware”.
d) The Imperative Mode serves to highlight the need to take heed.

2. “Lest anyone cheat you”

a) The word “cheat” is more forcefully expressed in the Greek Text.
b) Two ideas are behind the word “cheat”:-
i) To take captive.
ii) To rob.
c) The danger highlighted:-
i) There are false people (teachers/ friends).
ii) They will lead unsuspecting believers into captivity.
iii) They will rob believers.

3. What could be robbed?

a) Our joy in the Lord
b) Our abounding in the faith
c) Our growth
d) Our stability in Christ

4. Our responsibility

a) To see.
b) To beware.
c) To ensure that we do not get robbed (cheated) by that which is false.
