INTRODUCTION

1. Continuing with the theme of “So I looked for You in the Sanctuary”

2. As we look at the different Psalms of David, we learn different aspects concerning the sanctuary

a) The concept of the sanctuary

b) The counterpoint is to be a conscious worshipper

3. Today, our focus will be on the house of God in Psalm 5

4. The title of today’s message is “I will come into Your house in the multitude of Your mercy”

5. How did David come to an understanding concerning the house of the Lord?

FORMATIVE IDEAS OF WHO GOD IS

“Give ear to my words, O LORD, consider my meditation. Give heed to the voice of my cry,
My King and my God, for to You I will pray.”   Ps 5:1-2

1. The names of God

a) LORD (YHWH)

“And God spoke to Moses and said to him: “I am the LORD. I appeared to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, as God Almighty, but by My name LORD I was not known to them.”   Ex 6:2-3

b) Expressions of Lordship

i) King

ii) God

c) The way in which David addressed God

i) He addressed God in a formal, deep way

ii) He did not take God lightly

d) Many lack a formative idea of God

2. A strong formative idea of God affects the way we pray

a) The need for meditation in prayer

“Consider my meditation”

b) The reason to meditate

i) Reverence…this was David’s regard for God

ii) Because He is LORD … He is King … He is God

A FIRM UNDERSTANDING CONCERNING HOW GOD RELATES TO THE WICKED

“For You are not a God who takes pleasure in wickedness, nor shall evil dwell with You.
The boastful shall not stand in Your sight; You hate all workers of iniquity. You shall destroy those who speak falsehood; The LORD abhors the bloodthirsty and deceitful man.”   Ps 5:4-6

1. A clear, fixed understanding of what God is like

2. These were David’s firm ideas of God concerning the wicked in His presence

a) God does not take pleasure in wickedness

b) No evil shall dwell with Him

c) The boastful shall not stand in God’s sight

d) He hates all workers of iniquity

e) God will destroy those who speak falsehood

f) He abhors the bloodthirsty and deceitful man

3. In contrast to those who regard such people

a) There will be some who will relate to and regard those who are wicked

b) They are not holy and righteous themselves

4. These ideas are fixed and cannot be compromised

5. The problem with people who persist in sin and wickedness

a) No signs of changing

b) They have taken certain positions which are not going to work out

6. Holding on to our firm understanding of God and our position

a) We must hold on to our position

b) Should never change our position

FAITH APPLIED IN WORSHIP OF GOD

“But as for me, I will come into Your house in the multitude of Your mercy; in fear of You I will worship toward Your holy temple. Lead me, O LORD, in Your righteousness because of my enemies; Make Your way straight before my face.”   Ps 5:7-8

1. David’s faith was being applied

2. His faith was applied in how he sought to worship the Lord in His house

a) House idea

b) Holy Temple idea

c) Combining these two concepts

3. Regard for God and His house

4. In the multitude of His Mercy

5. In Fear (reverence)

6. Pray for the Lord’s leading

a) Prayer is part of worship

b) To seek God for His leading

c) David prayed with faith for the Lord to make His way straight

CONCLUSION

1. Seek to discover and develop good formative ideas of God

2. Determine firm ideas of God that we would not change

3. Be diligent to apply our faith in our worship of God in His house and temple

a) In the multitude of His mercy

b) With great sense of fear and reverence

c) Seeking His leading to make our way straight
