The need for faith in prayer

When we pray to God, there is a need for us to believe and have faith in Him. It is to be conscious that our prayers are not just words spoken into the air but are heard by God. He will answer our prayers as our heavenly Father.

Yet, we often allow doubt to get the better of us and we find it hard to believe that God will truly hear our prayers. Sometimes, when our prayers are not answered for a prolonged period, doubts arise and make us question whether God will indeed answer. The Apostle James wrote to his brethren who were going through various trials, challenging them to seek God for wisdom in facing these problems (James 1:5). However, they were struggling with doubts concerning their prayers and James sought to encourage them to have faith.

The problem of having doubts

  1. Doubts can hinder our prayer life adversely.
  2. How does doubt affect us?
  3. When we doubt, we waver…“For he who doubts is like a wave of the sea driven and tossed by the wind.” (James 1:6)
    1. The word “doubt” means to “waver”.
    2. Doubts cause us to waver in our faith, and we become like a wave being tossed to and fro.
  4. We become double-minded (James 1:8).
    1. This means that we vacillate in our position…having two minds.
    2. We vacillate between believing and not believing that God will hear our prayers .
  5. We become unstable in all our ways (James 1:8).
  6. As a result of our doubts, our prayers will not be answered (James 1:7).

Practising the prayer of faith

“But let him ask in faith, without doubting,” (James 1:6)

1. Exercise faith in our prayers

  1. The challenge is for us to ask in faith.
  2. It is based on our knowledge of God.
  3. God seeks to give liberally and is not a reluctant Giver (James 1:5).
  4. He gives without reproach…He is not angry when we ask of Him (James 1:5).
  5. The Lord Jesus also taught that our heavenly Father lovingly gives to His children what they would ask (Matthew 7:11).
  6. There ought to be complete faith and trust in God that He will answer us when we pray.

2. Eradicating all our doubts

  1. Faith must be exercised to eradicate all doubts.
  2. The challenge is for us to cease all doubts that come to our hearts.
  3. We replace them with a strong and robust faith in God.
  4. We can be assured from the Lord’s Word that He hears and answers prayers.
  5. The challenge is for us to draw closer to the Lord and seek Him more confidently.

Let us be challenged to replace all our doubts with faith in God. As we face the trials of life, let us seek the Lord for wisdom to make good choices. Let us be challenged to pray with full faith in the Lord that He will hear and answer our prayers.
