Text: 1 Corinthians 2

Subject: “We speak the wisdom of God in a mystery” 1 Cor 2:7

Lesson #11

6 However, we speak wisdom among those who are mature, yet not the wisdom of this age, nor of the rulers of this age, who are coming to nothing.

7 But we speak the wisdom of God in a mystery, the hidden wisdom which God ordained before the ages for our glory,

8 which none of the rulers of this age knew; for had they known, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory.

1 Corinthians 2:6-8

THE WISDOM OF GOD

6 However, we speak wisdom among those who are mature, yet not the wisdom of this age, nor of the rulers of this age, who are coming to nothing.

7 But we speak the wisdom of God in a mystery, the hidden wisdom which God ordained before the ages for our glory

1 Corinthians 2:6-7

1. The wisdom that Paul expounded

a) Paul spoke with deep wisdom
b) This was resisted and rejected by:
i) His detractors
ii) By those who do not believe
iii) By those who were unregenerate

2. The hidden wisdom of God

a) It is recognized by those who are mature in their faith
i) It takes knowledge to become mature
ii) It takes experience to become spiritually mature
iii) It takes growth to arrive at spiritual maturity
b) The wisdom of God as a mystery
i) The wisdom of God remains “a mystery” to the immature
ii) This is just “hidden wisdom”
iii) It needs to be revealed
iv) This was ordained by God Himself
v) Man by his wisdom, will never discover God’s mysteries
c) What were some reasons why God ordained His mysteries?
i) That man may recognize his limitations
ii) That he may be humble before God
iii) That he may repent from his foolish ways and seek God by faith
d) A special reason highlighted
i) God’s mysteries are revealed for His glory
ii) For the glory of the Church
iii) For the glory of those who belong to the Lord
iv) This is a humbling and yet profound reason

3. Those who will not be able to comprehend the mysteries of God

“Not the wisdom of this age, nor of the rulers of this age, who are coming to nothing”

1 Corinthians 2:6

a) Those who boast of “having the wisdom of this age”
i) They take pride in their knowledge/ wisdom
ii) They disdain the counsel of the Lord
iii) They reject the wisdom of God
iv) They choose to believe in the wisdom of this age
b) “The rulers of this age”
i) These could be secular leaders
ii) They could be religious leaders
iii) They are rulers who are recognized for their knowledge/ wisdom/ intelligence, etc.
c) They would not be able to fathom the wisdom of God for they would need to have:
i) Faith
ii) Spiritual discernment
iii) Revelation from God

OUR CHALLENGE

1. To seek spiritual maturity

2. To seek wisdom from God

3. To hunger and thirst after righteousness
