INTRODUCTION

1. Darkness

a) Pervasive and deadly

b) Affects the world, our society, our families, and us personally

2. The Lord Jesus is the light and offers light to all who follow Him

THE CONTRAST BETWEEN DARKNESS AND LIGHT

1. Darkness of sin affected the religious leaders

a) Mishandling of the law for their own purpose   (John 8:3-5)

b) They planned to trap and accuse the Lord Jesus   (John 8:6)

c) A spirit of condemnation   (John 8:10)

2. The light of the Lord Jesus

a) Full of grace and truth   (John 8:6-8)

b) Convicting the conscience.  (John 8:9)

c) No condemnation   (John 8:11)

3. The Lord Jesus offered a better way   (John 8:12)

a) To follow Him

b) To have the light of life instead of walking in darkness

THE UNFORTUNATE CHOICE WAS MADE TO NOT FOLLOW THE LORD JESUS

1. The pharisees

a) They dismissed the Lord Jesus   (John 8:13)

b) They did not believe Him   (John 8:21-24)

2. Those who professed faith in the Lord Jesus   (John 8:31-34)

a) They were yet to abide in the word of the Lord Jesus Christ

b) They were not following the Lord Jesus as His disciples

c) They were still slaves of sin

THE CORRECTION THE LORD JESUS OFFERED WAS MEANT TO BRING LIGHT

1. Truth revealed their error.  (John 8:14-19, 26)

a) His witness is true

b) His judgment is true

c) His spoken word is true

d) Truth was presented so that they would have knowledge

2. The darkness of sin needed to be exposed

a) Without light, the sinful deeds of men will never be exposed   (John 3:19-21)

b) The Lord Jesus revealed the very grave nature of sin   (John 8:21-24)

c) More than just exposure was the freedom from sin   (John 8:31-36)

i. The truth of His word shall make us free

ii. The Son makes us free from the enslavement of sin

THE CHALLENGE TO FOLLOW THE LORD JESUS

Then Jesus spoke to them again, saying, “I am the light of the world. He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life.”   John 8:12

1. Following the Lord Jesus is a personal choice we each must make personally

a) Follow His ways

b) Follow His teachings

2. We choose to follow the light of the world

a) Because the Lord Jesus has proven to be a good and dependable source of light

b) Because we reject walking in darkness

c) Because we recognize how much we need the light of life

CONCLUSION

1. Consider the Lord Jesus as our source of light

2. Choose to follow Him

3. Let His light correct us of the darkness of sin
