THIS BEGINNING OF SIGNS

THIS BEGINNING OF SIGNS

An invitation had come to attend a wedding in Cana of Galilee,
A good number were invited, Mary, Jesus and His disciples among many.
The wedding party went well at first; then came great sorrow,
They had run out of wine, and they could not from anyone borrow.

The wedding couple would be devastated with shame,
The family who had planned the wedding had only themselves to blame.
What could they do to save the joy of the moment?
They would do anything to assuage the torment.

Mary came to Jesus and explained to Him their need
Could Jesus somehow come up with a solution indeed?
Jesus brought the matter to His Father in prayer,
Should He respond and help the family in despair?

He quietly talked to the servants whose faces were grim,
He commanded that the water-pots be filled to the brim.
He astonished them when next He said,
“Serve the guests with the wine” He had made!

The servants looked at each other and did as they were told;
The guests were served the wine, and lo and behold!
The master of the feast was astonished with the quality of the wine,
In all the feasts he had attended he had never tasted anything as fine.

The honour of the family was saved that day,
But Jesus simply kept quiet and went on His way.
The disciples knew just what their Master did,
From then on they believed His every word and deed.

This was the beginning of signs that Jesus performed,
All the miracles were great signs that informed.
God gave signs that people may know and believe,
That Jesus was His Son who had salvation to give.
