Jesus Prays For His Disciples’ Oneness

Oneness is something that we must constantly pray for. It should not be taken for granted at anytime. The Lord Jesus certainly did not see it as a “done deal” that his disciples would have this oneness in the future. He sought to pray for this unity.

“I do not pray for these alone, but also for those who will believe in Me through their word; that they all may be one”
John 17:20-21

The Lord Jesus knew that His disciples were already quarrelling among themselves concerning who would be the greatest. They had feelings of envy against each other. Jesus was praying that His disciples would not just be one. He was interceding that they would also be one with future disciples. As we hear each week about oneness, let’s seek to convert what we hear into prayer. Let pray that all of us may be one.

The Perfect Example Of Oneness

“As You, Father, are in Me, and I in You”
John 17:21

What kind of oneness did the Lord Jesus pray for? He prayed for the type of unity which is perfect. The Lord prayed that His disciples would have the same oneness that God had with Him. The Lord Jesus truly understands how to be one with the Father. As the Father was working on the Sabbath, so the Lord Jesus was also working (John 5:17). He sought to fulfil the will of the Father. He was one in all things with the Father. Brethren, let’s seek to pray for this perfect oneness too.

To Be One With The Triune God

“That they also may be one in Us”
John 17:21

As we seek to be one, we can be one with the Lord. As we follow the oneness that the Father had with the Son, we too can have that oneness with the Father and the Son. There would be this special fellowship with the triune God. When we are one in the Lord, the presence of the Father and His Son would be there too.

For The World To Believe

“That the world may believe that You sent Me.”
John 17:21

When the world sees our oneness, we pray that they will recognise that the Lord Jesus is in our midst and that He was specially sent by God. The world will see the glory of the Lord in our midst. As we celebrate our Chinese New Year, let’s with oneness of heart and mind bear witness to the world. Let’s show to them that we are one in all that we do. Let’s invite our non-believing parents, relatives and friends for the Chinese New Year special on 12th February 2011. Let’s bear witness that we are one in the Lord Jesus. Let’s pray that through our collective testimony, the world may believe in Him. Happy Chinese New Year!
