Message: “The Bush was burning with Fire” Exodus 3:2

Text: Exodus 3:1-10

INTRODUCTION

1. The plight of the children of Israel in Egypt
They were groaning under the strain of slavery

2. The plea of the children of Israel
That had reached the ears of the LORD

3. He acknowledged the prayers of the children of Israel

MOSES TENDING TO THE FLOCK OF JETHRO

1. Moses had married Zipporah, the eldest daughter of Jethro, a priest of Midian

2. He had become a shepherd tending the flock of his father-in-law

3. The LORD had other plans for Moses!

THE CALL OF MOSES

1. The leading of the flock to Horeb

a) He led the flock of Jethro to the back of a desert
b) He came to Horeb, “the mountain of God”

 

2. The drawing of the attention of Moses

a) A flame of fire appeared in the midst of a bush
b) But the bush was not consumed
c) Moses said to himself
Then Moses said, “I will now turn aside and see this great sight, why the bush does not burn.”

THE ANGEL OF THE LORD

1. The appearance of the Angel of the LORD

a) He appeared to Hagar Genesis 16
b) He appeared to Jacob Genesis 32
c) He appeared to Moses
In a burning bush Exodus 3

2. The significance of His appearance

a) His involvement
b) His interest
c) His instruction

THE LORD SPEAKING TO MOSES

1. Calling out to Moses

So when the LORD saw that he turned aside to look, God called to him from the midst of the bush and said, “Moses, Moses!”
And he said, “Here I am.”

Exodus 3:4

a) The Angel of the LORD is Himself God
b) He speaks with authority as God
c) Moses’ attention was obtained

2. Instruction to Moses

5 Then He said, “Do not draw near this place. Take your sandals off your feet, for the place where you stand is holy ground.”

6 Moreover He said, “I am the God of your father—the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.” And Moses hid his face, for he was afraid to look upon God.

Exodus 3:5-6

a) Moses was on holy ground
b) He is to take off his sandals (many slaves go about barefooted)

3. Introduction of the LORD to Moses

a) The God of Abraham
b) The God of Isaac
c) The God of Jacob

4. Appropriate response of Moses

a) He hid his face
b) He was afraid to look upon God

GOD’S PLAN REVEALED

7 And the LORD said: “I have surely seen the oppression of My people who are in Egypt, and have heard their cry because of their taskmasters, for I know their sorrows. 8 So I have come down to deliver them out of the hand of the Egyptians, and to bring them up from that land to a good and large land, to a land flowing with milk and honey, to the place of the Canaanites and the Hittites and the Amorites and the Perizzites and the Hivites and the Jebusites. 9 Now therefore, behold, the cry of the children of Israel has come to Me, and I have also seen the oppression with which the Egyptians oppress them. 10 Come now, therefore, and I will send you to Pharaoh that you may bring My people, the children of Israel, out of Egypt.”

Exodus 3:7-10

1. God acknowledged the plight of the children of Israel

a) Their oppression
b) Their cries
c) Their sorrows

2. He has come to deliver them out of the hand of the Egyptians

3. He would bring them to the Promised Land (Canaan)

4. He will send Moses to Pharaoh

CONCLUSION

1. Revelation of God’s Person
The Angel of the LORD

2. Revelation of God’s Plan
To send Moses to deliver Israel out of Egypt and to lead them to Canaan
