THE FEAR OF THE LORD

COMMENCING THE NEW YEAR

Let us commence the New Year on a strong note. We begin a new Pulpit series on the theme, “The fear of then Lord.” This theme is both relevant and significant.

A SPECIAL WORK OF THE HOLY SPIRIT

Isaiah 11 focuses on a special work of the Holy Spirit in the life of the Messiah-Servant, the Lord Jesus Christ.

The Spirit of the LORD shall rest upon Him,

The Spirit of wisdom and understanding,

The Spirit of counsel and might,

The Spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the LORD.     Isaiah 11:2

  1. The Person of the Holy Spirit is described

a) Seven attributes are highlighted

b) Each aspect is significant

  1. The Ministry of the Spirit is also mentioned

a) He will rest upon the Messiah

b) He will anoint Him for ministry

c) He will empower Him effectively

  1. The fear of the LORD

a) This was mentioned last

b) But it is not the least in importance

THE FEAR OF THE LORD

What is the significance in mentioning the fear of the LORD in this particular text? The following things may be noted!

  1. The Messiah would exhibit all these qualities in His life and ministry
  1. These would express the tremendous work of the Spirit in His life
  1. The Messiah would display the following in His character and ministry

a) He would reflect the glory of the LORD God

b) He would also evidence wisdom and understanding

c) He would further show forth Divine Counsel

d) The might of the LORD would be His as well

e) The knowledge of the LORD would also be obviously seen

f) The fear of the LORD would also be clear and distinctively practised in His life and ministry

OUR CHALLENGE

Let our challenge in the New Year include a conscious effort to follow in the footsteps of the Lord Jesus. Let us seek to be filled with the Holy Spirit. May we comprehend further what it means to have the fear of the LORD in our life!
