THE PLACE CALLED CALVARY

Calvary was one of the ugliest spots just outside the holy city;

It was called Golgotha, for it looked like a skull, truly.

It was there that representative groups of humanity gathered;

Amidst the crowd, the Son of Man was severely tortured!

There were the enemies who kept mocking to the very end;

There were two thieves; one remained wicked, the other repentant.

Amidst great pain, Jesus spoke words of comfort and cheer;

He would be in paradise that very day, there was nothing to fear.

There were the hardened soldiers who couldn’t care less;

They decided that they would gamble for the clothes of Jesus!

The centurion was moved as He watched everything carefully;

He concluded, “This was a righteous Man… certainly!”

There was a small group of Disciples who watched from a distance;

They were not described as Disciples, but simply as “acquaintance.”

The crowds that day carried a mixture of responses that must give us pause;

How could there be people who can watch the Crucifixion with little remorse?

What stands out at the place called Golgotha or Calvary?

Surely it is the reality of the love of Jesus for sinful humanity!

The painful suffering and death on the cross, He did not rue;

Instead He said, “Father, forgive them for they do not know what they do!
