WOMAN, BEHOLD YOUR SON

WOMAN, BEHOLD YOUR SON

A Roman scourging would have broken most men,
To carry a heavy cross to Golgotha would have signaled the end.
To have dirty nails driven through the hands and feet,
Anyone, but Jesus, would have thrown a fit!

Jesus noted a group of women who to the cross drew near,
He looked at them and saw their faces were white with fear.
He looked at His mother who had grown old and very pale,
His heart went out to her, though He was in death’s dark vale.

He mustered strength and spoke to her with a tender voice,
He knew that her heart was broken, it could not rejoice.
“Woman, behold your son”- were the last words He spoke to her,
He tenderly looked at John and said, “Behold, your mother.”

John was deeply moved by this tender scene,
Jesus found strength to even speak to him.
He would honour all that Jesus said,
He took Mary to his home instead.
