SECRET DISCIPLES NO MORE
Jesus had many people who followed His teachings,
Some were fearless and were prepared to give up everything.
Others were fearful for they felt they had too much to lose,
These became “secret disciples” for their deep fear of the Jews.
Nicodemus was a renowned teacher but had not overcome fear,
He came to Jesus at night and sought answers just to be clear.
Joseph of Arimathea had also been another secret disciple before,
But when he saw Jesus condemned and crucified he was afraid no more.
Boldly he went up to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus, his Lord,
He and Nicodemus felt Jesus deserved a dignified burial, there was no discord.
Lovingly, and with deep sorrow, they prepared the Body of Jesus as best as they could,
They bought a hundred pounds of myrrh and aloes to anoint Him as they should.
They could not bear the thought of Jesus being thrown on the heap, disgracefully abused
They would wrap Him, and bury Him in a new tomb that had never been used.
The tomb was nearby and they tenderly carried Him there to rest,
This was the least they could do, they had failed the test.
No more would they be secret disciples, the Jews could do whatever they pleased,
Their heart had been smitten when they saw the body of Jesus finally at ease.
They would never again bow in fear and trepidation of the hate-filled Jews,
A new courage had risen in their hearts; Identification with Jesus was what they now choose.
