I THIRST… IT IS FINISHED

I THIRST… IT IS FINISHED

Even on the cross Jesus was fully conscious of what was happening,
He took care of His dear mother who had loved Him from the beginning.
He was aware of the callous soldiers who gambled for His clothes at will.
In all, He was concerned that the prophetic Scriptures must be fulfilled.

He hung there in agony, every minute brought torturous pain,
Each word He spoke, that it was a struggle, was most plain.
He had spoken to the thief who pleaded in repentance,
Jesus listened to his words and gave him tender assurance.

His mind recalled all that He had done according to His Father’s will,
He had done all that was needed, His heart taught Him to be still.
The sins of the world were laid upon the precious Lamb of God,
He must hold on till the sentence had been pronounced by the Lord.

His heart was stirred, His mind fully alert, the hour of His death had come,
But there was something that He must do yet, before all was said and done.
“I thirst” Jesus had quietly spoken, a soldier had watched His parched lips
He raised a spear with a sponge of sour wine for Jesus to take a sip.

His throat was still dry but the liquid brought some relief,
He mustered all His strength and cried out, but not with grief.
“It is finished!” Heaven’s angels wept in awe at what Jesus had done,
He had borne so much, He who was the Only Begotten Son.

The debt of sin had been fully paid and man could now be forgiven,
He may now have a glorious hope of a home in the Kingdom of heaven.
No one could have shown greater dignity and honour amidst so much pain,
Jesus the Son of God bore it so that all who believed in Him, salvation could obtain.
