BARABBAS

BARABBAS

Pilate had declared that he had found no fault in Jesus of Nazareth,
He studied the faces of the chief priests; they were grim, with no mirth.
He tried to salvage the situation, for he was at a loss,
He did not think that Jesus deserve to die on a cross.

There was a special custom that had been long established,
On Passover, they could ask for a prisoner to be released.
Pilate offered to release Jesus; how could they refuse?
The Jews wanted the death of Jesus, and not excuse.

There was a wicked robber who was sentenced to death,
He had killed people and watched them take their last breath.
How did Jesus compare with Barabbas, such an evil man?
Surely they would choose Jesus over their original plan?

The chief priests stoked the people and they cried,
With great venom they shouted, “Crucify Jesus, till He dies!”
They had chosen to set free Barabbas, that wicked man,
Things seemed to have gone wrong- but it was all in God’s plan.

Jesus had forewarned just how He would die,
He spoke of how He would be lifted up on high.
He had come to fulfill the Scriptures, that was His plan,
Though He must have been sad, He endured to the very end.
