A NEW COMMANDMENT

A NEW COMMANDMENT

Jesus always chose His word most carefully,
Each teaching was given ever so graciously.
The word “commandment” was not the usual word He used,
Why was there this new word? The disciples were bemused.

“A new commandment…,” There was no mistaking the gravity,
What was this new commandment? Jesus spoke with clarity.
“Love one another…” Jesus spoke to them with urgency,
They looked at each other somewhat ashamedly.

“As I have loved you…” Jesus spoke and looked them in the eye,
They understood what He said, but how could they comply?
They knew their hearts were not filled with deep affection,
They did not possess a heart of truest compassion.

“By this all will know that You are My disciples,” Jesus went on to explain,
This awesome goal, the disciples must now endeavor to attain.
They must learn to let the love of Jesus they had felt within,
Fill all their hearts and minds till every part is good and clean.

Jesus had loved His disciples to the very end,
He had shown them what it means to be a Friend.
They must let the love of their Master flow through them,
Then would they shine brightly as very precious gems.
