Text: Exodus 32:15-35

 

POST PRAYER WORK

1. Prayer is important

2. But there is also Post Prayer work
And it is just as important!

 

FACING HARD REALITY

1. Moses descends from Mount Sinai              Exodus 32:15

2. He carries with him 2 precious tablets

a) The tablets were the work of God              Exodus 32:16a

b) They were called the Tablets of the Testimony              Exodus 32:15

c) Writing of God engraved on the tablets              Exodus 32:16

3. Anger of Moses

a) Moses’ anger became hot              Exodus 32:19b

b) He broke the 2 tablets of stone              Exodus 32:19c

c) Burned the calf              Exodus 32:20

d) Israel made to drink the water mixed with burned residue of the calf              Exodus 32:20

4. Confrontation with Aaron

a) Querying Aaron              Exodus 32:21

b) Excuses of Aaron              Exodus 32:22-24

i) An attempt to placate Moses             Exodus 32:22

ii) The evil inclination of the people blamed              Exodus 32:23

iii) The making of the golden calf

5. Dealing with the issues at hand

INTERCESSION: STANDING IN THE BREACH II
Exodus 32:30-32

1. Speaking to the children of Israel

a) You have committed a great sin              Exodus 32:30b

b) I will go up to the LORD              Exodus 32:30b

c) Perhaps I can make atonement for your sin              Exodus 32:30c

2. Speaking to the LORD

a) Confession of sin

Oh, these people have committed a great sin, and have made themselves a god of gold!              Exodus 32:31a

b) Plea for forgiveness of sin

Yet now, if You will forgive their sin              Exodus 32:32b

c) An attempt at atonement

But if not, I pray, blot me out of Your book which You have written              Exodus 32:32c

 

GOD’S ANSWER TO MOSES
Exodus 32:33-35

1. The subject of sin

a) The person who sins (and does not repent) will be blotted out of God’s book              Exodus 32:33

b) Moses cannot offer himself as an atonement for the children of Israel

2. Instructions to Moses

a) Leading the people to Canaan              Exodus 32:34a

b) God’s Angel will go before them              Exodus 32:34b

c) Punishment will be meted out — just not now              Exodus 32:34c

3. Chastisement of the People

God plagued the people             Exodus 32:35

a) Moses’ prayer had only been able to cause God to curb His anger

b) The initial Intercession was insufficient

c) Moses knew that he must persevere in prayer

d) He must intercede further
