Epistle to the Romans

Message Notes

THE WORD “OBTAIN”

1. Three related words used and translated as “obtain, attain”

a) The word translated “obtain” (Romans 11:7) (epitugxavo)
i) To experience
ii) To obtain
b) The word translated “obtained” (Romans 9:30) (katalambano)
c) The word translated “attained” (Romans 9:31) (phthano) Cf. Philippians 3:16 “To the degree we have already attained”

2. Salvation by grace

a) It is to be experienced
b) This helps us to understand and appreciate that we have “obtained” it
c) But salvation cannot be “attained” by works

ISRAEL

1. It has not experienced salvation by grace;
Thus, it has not obtained salvation

2. But “the elect” have obtained it

a) The remnant
b) Called “the elect” (Literally “the chosen”)
c) Because they understood the grace of God

THE REST

1. Unbelieving Israel

2. “The rest” – Reference to those who do not believe

THE PROBLEM HIGHLIGHTED

1. They were “blinded” (translated) (Romans 11:7)

2. The actual word- “stubborn” (Romans 11:7)

CITING SCRIPTURES

1. Isaiah the prophet (Isaiah 29:9-10)

2. King David (Psalm 69:22-23)

Both writers used the word “blind.” Hence the NKJV translators used this word instead of “stubborn.”
